The following agglutination reactions are observed during a blood typing test: agglutination with anti-Rh, and no agglutination with either anti-A or anti-B. Identify the blood type.

-AB

As a recipient, which blood type would be the best to have? Why?

AB+ - because this person can receive blood from every other blood type

What blood types can someone who is AB- receive in a donation?

AB-, A-, B-, O-

Which blood constituent is responsible for producing antibodies?

Each plasma cell is essentially a factory for producing antibody. An antibody matches an antigen much like a key matches a lock.

What blood type is the universal donor? Why?

O negative- People with type O- blood are called universal donors because their donated red blood cells have no A, B or Rh antigens and can therefore be safely given to people of any blood group.

Name 3 substances other than blood cells that are found in plasma.

Plasma is mainly water, but it also contains many important substances such as proteins (albumin, clotting factors, antibodies, enzymes, and hormones), sugars (glucose), and fat particles. All of the cells found in the blood come from bone marrow.

Describe what happens if someone with A+ type blood receives a donation from someone with B+ type blood.

That means people with type A blood create antibodies against B antigens. A person with type A blood receiving a transfusion of type B or AB blood would have an ABO incompatibility reaction. In an ABO incompatibility reaction, your immune system attacks the new blood cells and destroys them.

Which blood constituent performs phagocytosis?

The professional phagocytes include many types of white blood cells.

Why is it better to transfuse only red blood cells rather than whole blood?

To avoid circulatory overload. Each part of the blood has a different function. Separating the blood into parts lets patients get only the specific part or parts of the blood that they need. So a whole blood donation can be used for several patients. Red blood cells are for oxygen after a trauma- anemia
