science atmospheric pressure test
who was Robert Boyle?
took a tube of Mercury and filled it up to the top with a sealed top. then turned it over into a bowl of mercury. it dropped to 760 mm which is the same as the weight of the atmospheric pressure.
who was Galileo?
an Italian scientist who discovered that air has weight in a contained space
who was Torricelli?
an Italian scientist who discovered that air has weight in the atmosphere. he worked with Galileo
what is a vacuum? what does/doesn't do?
an empty space that does NOT suck
what would happen to an inflated balloon if the temperature of the air inside the balloon decreases?
then air pressure would become lower and balloon would shrink
Who was Otto von Guericke?
...
what happens to air pressure as you go up in the atmosphere? why?
as elevation increases air pressure is lower because there is less air above you
what would happen to an inflated balloon if the air pressure outside the balloon decreased?
if temp out side balloon decreased then the balloon would expand because there wast as much air pushing on the ballon
give one example of a demonstration/experiment that illustrated the concept "uneven air pressure makes things happen" explain how this demo/experiment shows this concept
egg in the bottle. when you heat up the bottom of the bottle the molecules in the bottle start moving creating pressure then the air escapes from the bottle and then there was higher air pressure outside than in pushing the egg in the bottle
what is the relationship between weight, mass, and gravity?
gravity is a force that pulls on mass and mass is the amount of stuff in an object and mass doesn't change. weight is the amount of gravitational pull on mass.
Robert Boyle (part 2)
he sucked the air out of the air tight container. every time he sucked air out the mercury would drop until all the mercury is in the bowl
what would happen to an inflated balloon if the air pressure outside the balloon increased?
if pressure out the balloon then the balloon will shrink
what would happen to an inflated balloon if the temperature of the air inside the balloon increased?
if temp in ballon increases then pressure in balloon increases then balloon will expand
what is Boyle's law and why does it happen?
if tempurature is constant and volume increases then pressure decreases nad vice versa. because if in an air tight space if you give it more volume the air has more room but if you make it smaller the air is packed in more
what happens to air pressure as elevation/altitude increase?
it becomes less dense
if you taped a piece of paper onto the bottom of a cup, and then turned the cup upside down into water, would the paper get wet or stay dry?
it would stay dry because air was trapped in the cup and air was pushing against the water so the water cant push up into the cup
what are the units for force?
newtons and pounds
what are the units for pressure?
pascal, pounds per square inch (psi) mmHg, torr
what is pressure and what is its formula?
push of an object (the objects weight) over a certain amount of space. force over area
explain how unbalanced forces caused by uneven air pressure can cause things to happen
when pressure is higher on the outside than the inside then it will cause what ever is in the bottle to go up and if there is less air pressure outside and high air pressure inside then the water will go down
give one example of a demonstration/experiment that illustrated the concept "air pushes in all directions" explain how this demo/experiment shows this concept
when you turn the cup over with the paper a little water seeped out giving less air pressure in the cup and there was no way for more air to get in the cup leaving less air pressure in the cup and air pushes up on the paper holding it up
give one example of a demonstration/experiment that illustrated the concept "air pushes and exerts pressure" explain how this demo/experiment shows this concept
whomp the can. we heated up the water in the can then when then can was cooled in the water the tempurature went down as well as the pressure. since there was so little pressure inside the can and more outside the can was crushed
