When do you use the preterite of estar?
~ what your opinion of something was (how was it AT THE TIME bc temporary condition) ~ where someone/something was (we were there; location) ~ how someone felt for a period of time (e.g. felt happiness at a certain point in the past, not all the time)
When do you use the preterite of ser?
~ where an event took place ~ how someone did (fact) ~ sum up what someone/something was like (it went well; difficult/easy; one-time thing) ~ a permanent characteristic of something in the past that did not change as time went on (fact; classification)
How was the Spanish exam? They were in the library all day. I was sick all week.
¿Cómo estuvo el examen de español? Estuvieron en la biblioteca todo el día. Estuve enfermo toda la semana.
