Meat Inspection Act 1906
Made it so that meat would be inspected by the government from coral to can. It began a quality rating system as well as increased the sanitation requirements for meat producers.
Upton Sinclair
muckraker who shocked the nation when he published The Jungle, a novel that revealed gruesome details about the meat packing industry in Chicago. The book was fiction but based on the things Sinclair had seen.

an agency that sets the laws for all the companies that do business across state lines
National Reclamation Act 1902 (Newlands Act)
backed by Roosevelt in 1902, it provided federal funds for the construction of damns, reservoirs, and canals in the West—projects that would open new lands for cultivation and provide cheap electric power later on.

Pure Food and Drug Act 1906
1906 - Forbade the manufacture or sale of mislabeled or adulterated food or drugs, it gave the government broad powers to ensure the safety and efficacy of drugs in order to abolish the "patent" drug trade. Still in existence as the FDA.

African American progressive who supported segregation and demanded that African American better themselves individually to achieve equality.

Organization founded in 1909 to abolish segregation and discrimination, to oppose racism, and to gain civil rights for African Americans

Roosevelt helped the reforms of the African Americans by taking a stand to help those who are deprived to be noticed in the mainstream
3. What similarities did the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act share?
They both were passed by Theodore Roosevelt under his Square Deal in order to protect consumers. Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" ultimately led to major changes, and caused a push in the demand for consumer protection regarding food, especially meats. The Meat Inspection Act demanded meats that were shipped across state lines be inspected by the Federal Government. The Pure Food and Drug Act forbade the manufacture of food or patent medicine with harmful ingredients, and required ingredient labels.
The Jungle
This 1906 work by Upton Sinclair pointed out the abuses of the meat packing industry. The book led to the passage of the 1906 Meat Inspection Act.
Hepburn Act 1906
This Act tightened existing railroad regulation. Empowered the Interstate Commerce Commission to set maximum railroad rates and to examine railroad's financial records.
1902 Coal Strike
United Mine Workers demanded 20 percent wage increase, a reductive in daily working hours from ten to nine, and formal management recognition in their union; mines shut down in an effort to starve out the miners; Roosevelt's conference ended in an impasse, he threatened to take over the mines and and run them with the army; ended in October with an agreement to submit the issues to an arbitration commission named by the president; enhanced the prestige of Roosevelt and the nation's leaders, but only partial victories for the miners; won 9 hour work day and only 10% increase wages

enjoyed boxing even when in office. he still loved boxing after he was blinded in one eye by one of his opponents. One day he galloped 100 miles on horseback just to prove the feat was possible. In Politics Theodore Roosevelt acted audaciously. He used his personalty and popularity to advance his programs. His leadership and publicity campaigns helped create the modern presidency. He became the model by which all future presidents were measured.
The Niagara Movement
this was a movement to gain political and social rights for African Americans. It was begun by W.E.B Dubois.
