How did imperialism increase tensions in Europe?
Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Russia fought for colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Several nations often competed for the same region. This led to wars.

The Allies have about 11 million soldiers, the Central Powers have 7 1/2 million soldiers.
Tensions exist in Europe. Study the map on page 685. List the countries that are Allies (green) and neutral that later joined the allies, Central Powers (darker purple) and neutral nations that later joined the Central Powers.
The Central Powers were Germany and Austria-Hungary. Neutral nations that joined them were Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. The Allies were the United Kingdom, France, Serbia, and Russia. The neutral nations that joined them were Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Romania, and Greece.
What were the alliances before the start of World War 1?
The Triple Entente included Great Britain, Russia, and France. The Triple Alliance included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Great Britain also had a side alliance with Belgium.
