What is a "simple" supply chain?

A simple supply chain is a simplified model of a supply chain involving a supplier, a company and a customer (Harrison and Hoek, 2011). In reality supply chains are more complicated, and have more parties involved.

What is a Supply Chain?

A supply chain consists of all parties involved, directly or indirectly, in fulfilling a customer request. The supply chain includes not only the manufacturer and suppliers, but also transporters, warehouses, retailers, and even customers themselves. Within each organisation, the supply chain includes all functions involved in receiving and filling a customer request. These functions include, but are not limited to, new product development, marketing, operations, distribution, finance and customer service (Chopra and Meindl, 2016)

A supply chain strategy is a plan or direction on how a supply chain should be organised and how it should operate to obtain a firms business objectives. A supply chain strategy determines the nature of material procurement, transportation of materials, manufacturer of products or creation of services and the distribution of the product. All processes at the interface between the firm and its suppliers. It involves sourcing, negotiating, buying, design collaboration, supply collaboration (Chopra and Meindl, 2016)

What is internal supply chain management (ISCM)?

All processes that are internal to the firm. It involves: strategic planning, demand planning, supply planning, order fulfillment and field service. (Chopra and Meindl, 2016)
