What is a symbol map effective for?

Showing quantitative data for individual locations. Works best with data containing large variations of values. Without enough variation, the symbols will appear approximately the same size in the view.

Nested Sort

Sort that considers each pane independently and sorts the rows per pane. It is most useful when you want to sort within a category of items in a view

Non-Nested Sort (Comparative Sort)

Sort that considers the value across panes and will have the same order of values per pane. Most useful when you want a comparison across all items in a view

Manual Sort (Specific rule to remain at top of view)

Specific sort you want data to be in, you tell Tableau what you want. Example: If sci-fi convention is on near by more specific genre to top of list so it is always at the top. Maintained even when the data changes, specific sort will always remain in the order you put them in despite changes in the data.

Physical Tables Option

Stores data using one extract table for each physical table in the data source. Should only be used sparingly to help with specific situations such as when the size of your extract is larger than expected. Use if your extract is compromised of tables combined with one or more equality joins and meet the conditions for using the physical tables option. If you use this option, joins are performed at query time.

Why are extracts advantageous?

Support large data sets, fast to create and work with, help improve performance, support additional functionality, provide offline access to your data

The calculation uses each cell as its scope. Example February or Q1

Pane (Down)

The calculation uses each pane as its scope and it computes down the pane (first section of the table)

Pane (Across)

The calculation uses each pane as its scope, and it computes across the pane (i.e. first section)

Dynamic Set

The members of this CHANGES when the underlying data changes. These can ONLY be based on a single dimension. Useful for when you want to analyze data that changes frequently. Example: You want to compare the profit data for the top 10 customers in the dataset. In this case using a _____ _____ will ensure that the members in your set update if there is a change in the top 10 customers list.

Fixed Set

The members of this DO NOT CHANGE, even if the underlying data changes. The only way you can change this is if you edit the set and either add or delete dimension members. This can be based on a single dimension or multiple dimensions. Example: You want to compare a set of specific products to the rest of the products. In this case, creating a _____ ____ would be an easy way to compare and complete the analysis.

Live Connection

This is the default connection. It's a direct connection to you data from the source file. This connection is best used when you want to leverage a high performance database's capabilities, or get up-to-the second changes in data visualized in Tableau. Cons can be that slow experience depending on size of data.

Set Control

To give your audience the ability to quickly modify members of a set, you can display this, which is essentially a drop down menu icon on the set name. YOU CAN ONLY DISPLAY THIS FOR DYNAMIC SETS - NOT FIXED - & MUST BE IN VIEW).

Which views are good choices for showing part-to-whole comparisons?

Tree Maps (good for displaying data sets with long tails that have many small values that contribute to the whole dataset) and Pie Charts.

Range of Dates Filter

Use to define a fixed range of dates to filter. Example: Use this filter when you want to see all orders placed between March 1, 2009 and June 12, 2009.

Start/End Date Filter

Use to define a fixed start/end date to filter on

Relative Date Filter

Use to define a range of dates that updates based on the date and time you open the view. Example: Create dynamic filters to only show the current week, the year to date, or the past 10 days.

Special Option Filter

Use to filter on null values

Logical Tables

Use when you want to limit the amount of data in your extract with additional extract properties like extract filters, aggregation, Top N, or other features that require denormalized data. Also use when your data uses pass-through functions (RAWSQL). This is the default structure Tableau uses to store extract data. If you use this option when your extract contains join, the joins are applied when the extract is created.

Date Filter

Used to filter data on specific date or time criteria. Tableau allows you to create filters on continuous date values or discrete date parts.

How to write a custom table calculation?

Using the calculated field editor. Build complex table calculations using the calculation syntax

Table (Down)

Using whole table as its scope and computes down the table

When does Tableau recommend using physical tables in an extract?

When the extract using logical tables is larger than expected

When are density maps most effective?

When the location data is very precise, such as location coordinates in a limited space. For example, events associated with specific street-level addresses. Also, where the specific locations change continuously and smoothly across the space, rather than values constrained to discrete locations such as district, borough, or neighborhood

Which situation would an outer join be preferred to a blend?

When you need to include all rows from both tables, even when the join or blend criteria is not met.

Full Outer Join

When you use this join to combine tables, the result is a table that contains all records from both tables. When a value from either table doesn't have a match with the other table, you see a NULL value in the join results.

Left Join

When you use this join to combine tables, the result is a table that contains all records from the left table and only records with matching values from the right table. When a value in the left table doesn't have a corresponding match in the right table, you see a NULL value in the join results.

Right Join

When you use this join to combine tables, the result is a table that contains all records from the right table and only records with matching values from the left table. When a value in the left table doesn't have a corresponding match in the left table, you see a NULL value in the joins results.

When are whisker plots useful?

When you want to compare multiple distributions of the data

When is a filled map ideal?

When you want to show ratio data. For example, if you wanted to see the percent of total podcast downloads across the USA, you could use this to show trends spatially.

Benefits of saving customizations you made to a .tds file include:

You can save time by starting from the .tds in the future and share the .tds file with other so they can benefit from the customizations and get right to the analysis.

When you combine sets....

You create a new set containing either the combination of all members, just the members that exist in both, or members that exist in one set but not the other. YOU MUST HAVE THE SAME DIMENSIONS. the Data pane, select the two sets that you want to combine Right-click the sets and select Create Combined Set. In the Create Set dialog box, do the following:

Manual Union

You select specific data sheets or table to combine using a union. Tables in the union tables come from within the same connection (you cannot union tables from different databases).

What is the best scenario for using a box and whisker plot?

You want to see a clear threshold for outliers in your data

In which of the following scenarios would a bar in the bar chart be the best choice?

You want to show two measures against on another simultaneously

In which of the following scenarios would a bar-in-bar chart be the best choice?

You want to show two measures against one another simultaneously

When is the best reason to use a relationship instead of a join?

You wish to avoid duplication when combining tables with different granularity.

positive correlation

a relationship between two variables in which both variables either increase or decrease together

Measures (GREEN)

contain quantitative data, so filtering this type of field involves selecting a range of values that you want to include. Example: Show only products that have sales greater than 10,000

what are tree maps?

display data in nested rectangles. dimensions define the structure of the ____ ___ and measures define the size and color of the individual rectangles.

create a chart showing comparison of sales and profits over continuous last 4 years

drag order date (YEAR) to the column and right click and click month to change to continuous chart over a year then drag sales to rows area and drag profit to the right of the chart until you see a green ruler (this will create the profits on the right side and sales on the left)

Outliers

extreme values that don't appear to belong with the rest of the data

Date Part Filter

sometimes you may want to filter to include specific dates (looking for sales data for specific years or quarters). You are defining discrete values instead of a range.

negative correlation

the relationship between two variables in which one variable increases as the other variable decreases

no correlation

there does not appear to be a relationship between two sets of data

What is required to create a dual axis chart?

two measures and one or more dimensions
