The Civil War
You will need to know the Union's Anaconda Plan.
Anaconda Plan: Navy was to surround Confederacy and suffocate them of resources and trade until they were too weak to fight.
You will need to explain the runaway chase that ensued after Lincoln was assassinated and the ultimate outcome of that chase.
Booth and Herold both travel through Maryland until they are finally captured
I can explain what states were considered border states and why they were so important and somewhat different from other states.
Border States: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia and Missouri. Importance: Provide buffer space for protection. Provide Extra Men & Resources. Kentucky & Missouri had confederate & union government, both thought they were legit. (Union was the most legit tho) Virginia also had 2 governments, but the Confederate dominated so it split into West Virgina & Virginia, Confederate supporters moved south into Virginia. All of the border states became union states, but all were slave states.
I can explain who Abraham Lincoln was, where he was from, and his personal background and family life.
Born in a janky log cabin in Kentucky. His fail of a father lost their land so they had to move to Indiana when Abe was 7. Mommy died when he was 9. RIP. Brother and sister die as babies. RIP. He grew up poor (America poor, not Africa poor) He moved to Illinois when he was 21 to help his father set up a farm. Abe worked random jobs before deciding to become a lawyer. He was elected to the Illinois legislature. Next he was elected to the house of representatives. He left and went home. Decided to go back. Ran against Stephan Douglas for Senate and lost. Later ran for the Republican party and lost again. Nah jk he won. Then Married Mary Todd (psycho chick who dated Stephan). His sons kept dying? idk.
You will need to explain what happened to the conspirators after they were caught and the Presidential position after Lincoln was killed.
Dr. Sam Mudd and three other men (Michael O'Laughlin, Ned Spangler, and Samuel Arnold) are all arrested for their involvement in the conspiracy and sent to prison at Fort Jefferson, which is down off the coast of the Florida Keys. O'Laughlin dies there, but the rest are eventually pardoned for their crimes. John Surratt, Jr. Flees the country and lives abroad for years until he later returned to the U.S. after his wanted captured expired. Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt are all sentenced to death and are hanged in the summer of 1865 at Fort McNair in Washington D.C.
I can explain what the Emancipation Proclamation was, why Lincoln would issue it, the immediate effects the document had, and the long-term effects the document had.
He decided to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which said that the slaves from the south could be free in the north (or something like that). This didn't count for the border states. He issued it as a war tatic.
I can explain some acts that Abraham Lincoln took that might make him out to be a tyrant in the eyes of some people while a hero and great leader in the eyes of others.
He suspends habeas corpus (or the right to a trial) and arrests those who aren't cooperating. He goes against the constitution. But he also stops slavery, so that's nice.
I can explain Abraham Lincoln's rise in politics and what he believed as a politician, particularly when it came to slavery.
He wasn't too concerned about slavery because he had other priorities like keeping the union together. A Year and a half into the war, the slaves kept coming into the north, having escaped the south in search of freedom. Lincoln didn't know what to do with them.
You will need to explain who killed Abraham Lincoln.
John Wilkes Booth
You will need to explain the larger conspiracy planned behind Lincoln's murder.
John was going to kidnap Lincoln and hold him for ransom instead but that plan failed and John ended up deciding he was going to shoot Lincoln instead
I can explain why Lincoln had a hard time stopping this secession.
Lincoln can't do shit because he isn't officially president yet.
You will need to know the major battles and general flow of the war, specifically including Lincoln's Peninsula Campaign, Gettysburg, Grant's Overland Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea, and Lee's surrender.
Major Battles: Bullrun, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, The Battle of Seven Days, Second Bullrun, Battle of Antietam (caused Lincoln to set the Emancipation Proclamation into effect), the Battle of Fredericksburg, Peninsula Campaign: Lincoln placed General George McClellan (the super safe general) in charge. The goal was to land along the coast of Virginia and drive their way through Richmond to take the capital city of the Confederacy and end the war. Gettysburg: Grant's Overland Campaign: Sherman's March to the sea: Lee's Surrender:
You will need to know the advantages, disadvantages, and motivations of both the North and the South to fight.
North: Advantages: More people and states and resources. Disadvantages: Generals keep ****ing up, a bunch of lazy ass people. Motivations: Free slaves, stay unified. South: Advantages: Smart Generals, wars are fought on their land. Disadvantages: Less resources and space, less soldiers. Motivations: Be their own country, keep slavery.
I can explain which state led the secession and the Battle of Fort Sumter.
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the united states, other states soon followed.
I can explain what the new Southern states called themselves and their President.
They called themselves the confederacy, obviously. Their president was Jefferson Davis.
You will need to explain why these people acted against Lincoln and their other targets.
They thought they were doing the right thing in killing Lincoln.
I can explain which states seceded from the Union and what states were part of the Union.
Union States: Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Nevada, and Oregon. Confederate States: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee.
You will need to know the major leaders of the war.
Winfield Scott: Made Anaconda Plan Union Generals: McClellan, Ambrose Burnside, Hooker, Meade, Grant, Sherman. Confederate Generals: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E Lee
