the dutch west India company freed them. other slaves were able to buy their freedom. former slaves were not completely free
1629 DWIC's plan to get more settlers
they'd get large pieces of land if the patrons brought in 50 new settlers to the colony. the settlers had to farm the patroons land, pay rent & follow rules
