Why is Starr upset with the tv interview with Officer Cruise's father?

Starr first gets upset because the interview only mentions the bad aspects of Garden Heights, like the "gangs and drug dealers" (245). On p. 357, Starr says, "My two worlds just collided. Surprisingly, everything's all right." Explain.

Starr had invited Maya and Chris to Seven's party. Throughout the novel, Star mentions her two worlds: Williamson High, and home, or the Garden. She talks about how difficult it is being two different versions of herself, both in thought and in deed (note code switching, for example). Starr tells Maya and Hailey, "I don't know that Khalil" (113) Why?

Starr says this, because she knows that everyone at Williamson thinks of Khalil as nothing more than a drug dealer and she doesn't want to be seen as 'the thug ghetto girl with the drug dealer."

What does Starr tell Uncle Carolos about the shooting?

Starr tells Uncle Carlos that officer 115 had his gun pointed at her while they were waiting for help to arrive for Khalil.

"Williamson Starr"

Khalil Harris

Starr's childhood best friend who is shot by officer 115 in traffic stop; Rumor that he dealt drugs and was in King Lord's gang. Uncle Carlos

Starr's maternal uncle, a police officer; served as a father figure in Starr's life, particularly while Maverick was in prison. With his job as a police officer and a home in a suburban, gated community, Uncle Carlos assimilates into the white community, and encourages Lisa to do the same with her family, leading to conflict with Maverick.

Starr's mom tells her a story about how Starr wasn't breathing when she was born (152). Why do you think she chooses this moment to tell that story?

Hailey had confronted Starr with the information that Starr in fact did know Khalil, despite denying it ("I don't know that Khalil,") and in return Starr confronted her about her "racist... He invalidates her discontent about not being invited by returning that he did not think she "gave a damn about [his] birthday" that year, as she "never has" (360). He criticizes her for never coming to "any of [his] stuff," "putting [him] out of the house," and "choosing a man over [him]" (360). He tells Iesha he never deserved those things, for all he ever did was "love" her (360).

How does the novel come to a close? Assess the ending. Is it open-ended (many things still to be resolved) or closed (all the threads resolved)? Is the ending appropriate? Satisfying? Inspiring?

Angie Thomas ends the book with listing the names of real people who have been killed by police enforcement illustrating that Khalil's death is not made up but happens more often than we think in our Country. The ending is meant to be hopeful with Starr's ending statement that she'll never forget Khalil, "[she'll] never give up. Never be quiet", (pg. 444) hopefully promoting change. The ending is open-ended in the sense that even though there is hope for change we are not there yet and we have to keep fighting for equal rights. There is so much that still needs to be changed.

Starr: "light in the darkness" (365) Seven: "holy number... perfection... the perfect gift God gave" (365) Sekani: "merriment and joy" (364)

At Seven's party, Mav makes a toast/announcement, and explains his kids' names, and what they mean to him. His oldest, Seven,, though perhaps not conceived in the way he would have wanted or planned, was a gift from God. Starr was a light in a period of darkness for Mav. And Sekani was a joyful surprise. Throughout the novel, Seven acts as a reasonable and enlightening character for Starr, for support and advice. Sekani, on the other hand, is a sort of innocent beacon for Starr. He constantly cracks jokes and makes Starr smile, even the morning after Khalil's murder. Starr herself becomes a source of light and good in a storm of darkness. She tries to bring light to the horrors of Khalil's murder and in general, oppression and brutality.

The Folded Grey Bandana

Bandana that insinuates that Khalil was a King Lord

How is Brook Falls perfect for Starr's family? How can they afford it?

Brook Falls is perfect because it gives the Carters an opportunity to get away from the danger they are in in garden heights (especially with King), but is not as predominantly white and stuffy as Uncle Carlos' neighborhood. They are able to afford the new house because they are going to rent the Garden Heights house and Mrs. Carter got the nurse manager job.

4: Why is there always tension between Mav and Carlos?

Carlos believed that Mav was a bad influence when they were younger, and additionally Carlos took care of Starr and her family while Mav was in prison. This caused Starr and Carlos to develop a pseudo father daughter relationship while Mav was absent, causing jealousy and tension between the two. Also, Carlos' job as a police officer as well as his home in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood distances their relationship further.

Why do Mav and Carlos argue about the Cedar Grove King Lords?

Carlos is a cop and he wanted the cops to be contacted about the brick so that they could place a guard at the house. He also is worried about what people may think of him showing up to court with a gang as protection when he is a cop.

Who rescues Starr, DeVante, Seven, and Chris from the tear gas?

Goon, a cedar grove king lord, rescues them and allows them to ride in his truck away from the chaos to the store.

Mr. Lewis

He owns the barber shop next to Mav's shop, and he snitches on King on live TV.

Ms. Rosalie

Khalil's loving grandmother who often looked after Starr and Sekani when they were young.

Brenda Harris

Khalil's mother, a drug addict who was often absent during Khalil's childhood.

How does King threaten Maverick? (273)

King pulls up in front of the store in his gray BMW, and initially asks where Devante is. King's real threat is to put Starr "in danger" if she were to "run [her] mouth" to the DA (273).

When Starr and her friends take shelter in Mav's store, what suddenly happens?

King throws a lit bottle into the store and it goes up in flames. Starr and her friends are trapped as all of the exits are blocked.

4: What do Mav and Lisa give Ms. Rosalie?

Lisa and Mav give Ms. Rosalie a decent amount of money, not only to help repay her for all the times she helped take care of their kids, but also to help pay for Khalil's funeral

Malcolm X

Malcolm X was an African American leader in the civil rights movement, minister and supporter of black nationalism. He urged his fellow black Americans to protect themselves against white aggression "by any means necessary," a stance that often put him at odds with the nonviolent teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr. His charisma and oratory skills helped him achieve national prominence in the Nation of Islam, a belief system that merged Islam with black nationalism. After Malcolm X's assassination in 1965, his bestselling book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, popularized his ideas and inspired the Black Power movement (see below).

Why are Mav and Carlos friends again?

Mav and Carlos both grew up in Garden Heights. Carlos became a cop and got out of the neighborhood but it is still his roots. They know the same people and both have fond memories of Garden Heights. They also find common ground on wanting to be there for Starr and put that above everything else.

4: Why does Mav argue with Carlos about Starr going to the police station?

Mav believes that if Starr goes to the police station, the police will search for a justification for the police's shooting of Khalil, rather than investigate the truth.

Summarize the debate between Mav and the Cedar Grove King Lords and the Garden Disciples about the prospect of more violence in the neighborhood.

Mav wants the two gangs, the Cedar Grove King Lords (Kings) and the Garden Disciples (GDs), to make peace for the time being. He claims the "territory wars gotta be put aside somehow," because the issues at hand- police brutality and "outta hand" riots- are bigger than some street shit" (341-342). He asks that each gang help to advise the youth ("li'l dudes) "not to burn this neighborhood down" and not to "destroy black owned businesses" ( 341-342). Essentially, he calls, "for the sake of the Garden," for "unity" (342).

3: How does Mav confront King?

Mav was asked to hold King's drugs, but he reprimands him for this request by reminding him of the time Mav got sent to jail. He also warns King not to hurt Seven.

Andre

Mav's cousin; was killed in a drug deal very soon before Starr was born. His death was a dark time, so Mav named Starr "Starr" to bring light into their lives

Adonis Carter

Mav's father, he was King Lord and one of the biggest drug dealers in Garden Heights. He went to jail when Maverick was young and ended up being in jail with Mav for a few years.

Who saves Starr and her friends from the fire?

Maverick unlocks the back door and saves them from the fire. Starr falls to the ground due to smoke inhalation and an ambulance is called. Mr Lewis saw them in the store.

Iesha

Mother to Seven, Kenya, and Lyric, a sex worker who is dating King. Iesha puts her relationship with King over the safety of her children, but she is also a victim of King's abuse.

Lisa Carter

Mother to Starr and Sekani, and step-mother to Seven. Lisa is a nurse and a loving but firm mother. Although she comes off as strict, Lisa has a compassionate heart and teaches the importance of forgiveness and second chances. She fiercely protects her children and always reminds her husband, Maverick, not to push the children too far into dangerous activism.

As Starr and her friends recover, three surprising things occur. Explain these three things and how they are three examples of how "the rules no longer apply" (425).

Mr. Lewis and others snitch on King, Daddy snitches on King, Starr snitches about how King beat up DeVante. Khalil says that he will turn witness against king and tell the cops where king's stash is. These things demonstrate how people have come to ignore the "rules" of garden heights that had been dictated by the gangs in the community.

What will happen to Mav's store?

Mr. Lewis gives Mav his barber shop to expand the store after King tried to burn down the store. Mr. Lewis exclaims that the store needs to be rebuilt because the community needs more people like Big Mav around.

"Use your weapon"

Ms. Ofra counsels Starr into using her voice in order to obtain justice for Khalil's murder. She says that Starr's voice is her greatest weapon, and tells her to use it as Starr speaks her truth into the megaphone while protestors and cops listen. This scene is monumental because it shows Starr finding her voice and using it to fight for Khalil, she even throws a canister of tear gas at cops.

4: How is Ms. Rosalie like a mother to Lisa Carter in addition to being Khalil's grandmother?

Ms. Rosalie's daughter Tammy and Lisa were best friends, and Ms. Rosalie took in Lisa when her parents kicked her out once she became pregnant in high school. Additionally, Ms. Rosalie helped take care of Lisa's kids so she wouldn't have to drop out of school.

Who confronts King at Khalil's funeral? Why?

Ms. Rosalle confronts King because he puts the folded grey bandana on Khalil's dead body.

"I Can't Breathe"

On July 17, 2014, NYPD officers approached Eric Garner on suspicion of selling single cigarettes from packs without tax stamps. An officer then put him in a headlock or chokehold for about 15 to 19 seconds while arresting him. NYPD policy prohibits the use of chokeholds. After Garner lost consciousness, officers turned him onto his side to ease his breathing. Garner remained lying on the sidewalk for seven minutes while the officers waited for an ambulance to arrive. The officers and emergency medical technicians did not perform (CPR) on Garner at the scene. Eric Garner died an hour later in Staten Island, New York City. The officer denied choking Garner, but the New York City Medical Examiner's Office report stated "Cause of Death: Compression of neck (choke hold), compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police." The coroner ruled the death a homicide, but a grand jury refused to indict the officer. The filming of the incident brought police brutality into wider public awareness and led to numerous protests, many connected to the Black Lives Matter movement. Protesters have made use of Garner's last words, "I can't breathe" (which he said 11 times), as a slogan and chant against police brutality since Garner's death and Officer Pantaleo's grand jury decision. By December 28, at least 50 protests in support of Garner had occurred globally, and many other Black Lives Matter-related demonstrations had occurred.

How does Starr actually defend Iesha to Kenya?

She relates her own struggles to those of Iesha's to Kenya. She recalls how she "was afraid to speak out for Khalil," and that sometimes its "hard to stand up for yourself" (362).

Maverick "Big Mav" Carter

Starr, Seven, and Sekani's father who runs small grocery store in Garden Heights. Dark past in King Lord's gang and short stint in prison, but engaged father who devotes himself to family and neighborhood. Maverick inspires Starr by educating her on Black Power philosophy, but he struggles with balancing his values of black liberation with the reality that those values put him and his family in danger. His strong beliefs often get him into arguments with Uncle Carlos, who helped care for Maverick's children while Maverick was in prison.

"5 G's"

Talking about the $5,000 that DeVante stole from King; he did it to buy his mom and sisters bus tickets out of town so no Garden Disciples would come after them after he went after Dalvin's killer

Nana

Tells Starr "Thank God the lord spared your life" which catches Starr by surprise; retired theater teacher; dramatic

How is the brick a "message for Starr"?

The brick is a threat trying to scare Starr before the grandy jury. They aren't sure who threw the brick, it could have been the King Lords or even the cops themselves. The King Lords would be sending the message that Starr should be scared to reveal anything about Khalil's affiliation and dealing with the gang. The cops would be sending the message that Starr shouldn't say anything proving officer 115's guilt in the murder of Khalil.

The Huxtables

The Huxtable family was the focus of The Cosby Show, a wildly-popular American sitcom which ran for eight seasons in the 1980s. Given that the Huxtables were an upper-class African-American family living in Brooklyn, they became a pop culture touchpoint and helped pave the way for a larger variety of shows in the 90s with a predominantly black cast, such as In Living Color, Different World, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (a show Starr and Chris refer to frequently in The Hate U Give).

Social Justice

The campaign for fair and just relations between the individual citizen and society at large, as measured by the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity, and social privileges. In the current global grassroots movements for social justice, the emphasis has been the breaking of barriers for social mobility based on race, class, nationality, and sexuality.

King

The leader of the King Lords gang. King profits off the drug dealings in Garden Heights, but does not care about the community, threatening elderly men and teenagers alike to protect his hold over the neighborhood. King abuses his girlfriend, Iesha, and daughters, Kenya and Lyric.

Code Switching

The practice of alternating between two or more means of expression in conversation based on the environment in which one is expressing him or herself to the person to whom s/he is speaking. This can mean alternating between languages (i.e speaking Spanish at home and English at school, or speaking "Spanglish" with friends) or alternating between dialects, styles, and/or registers (i.e. using slang with friends and more formal speech with parents or teachers).

How do Mav and the gangbangers react to Starr and Seven's suspension?

They cheer the kids on, complimenting them on their fighting skills. Someone shouts "you got hands" to Starr and Mav exclaims "[l]ook at my boy... look at him," reacting to Seven's punch (342-343). Eventually, Mav concedes to his wife, punishing the kids mildly for their suspension.

"Justice for Khalil"

The protest at Williamson. All the students shout "justice for Khalil" and leave their classes. They use the protest as an excuse to miss school.

What revelation at Khalil's funeral leads to the demonstrations in Garden Heights?

The revelation that Khalil was unarmed leads to the Garden Heights protests.

What crucial fact about Khalil's murder does Ms. Ofrah tell Starr and her parents? Where will Starr speak out for Khalil?

There was actually no gun in the car at all. The gun that Officer Cruise claimed he saw Khalil reach for was a black hairbrush. Starr is going to speak in front of a grand jury, which means that the DA will be asking Starr all the questions and there won't be a judge or defense attorney.

Detectives Gomez and Wilkes

These are the detectives who ask Starr questions about the night of Khalil's murder. Gomez is a "Latina with lines around her mouth and a spiky haircut" and Wilkes is "a young white guy with slick black hair."

Devante and Dalvin:

They are brothers and are both King Lords. Dalvin gets killed at Big D's party. Devante starts selling drugs for King to provide for his family.

3: Why does Mav say they should keep quiet about Starr as witness to Khalil's killing?

They do not want Starr to receive backlash as a result of her ties to Khalil and his death. If the public doesn't know, she will not be forced into the eyes of the media and the scrutinization of the world.

Tupac (2Pac) Shakur

Tupac Shakur was an American rapper and actor who came to embody the 1990s gangsta-rap aesthetic, and who, in death, became an icon symbolizing noble struggle. He has sold 75 million albums to date, making him one of the top-selling artists of all time. Born in 1971, in Harlem, NY, Tupac exhibited significant creative talent at an early age, a talent which eventually earned him a spot in the prestigious Baltimore School for the Arts. Despite this promise, he was nevertheless forced into selling drugs as the result of his family's poverty and his mother's own crack addiction. In 1991, Tupac Shakur moved to California and almost immediately became an internationally-famous rapper. In addition to music, Tupac also published a bestselling book of poetry and starred in the blockbuster film Juice. A sensitive, precociously talented and troubled soul, Tupac was gunned down in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996 and died six days later. His murder has never been solved. He was 25 years old.

When Starr reveals the reason why Khalil sells drugs it is considered dry snitching. Starr tells Diane Carey that Khalil sells drugs to help his mother out because she is indebted to the "biggest drug dealer and gang leader in the neighborhood" (288). While Starr doesn't reveal that said gang leader is King, Starr still knows that anyone in Garden Heights "will know exactly who [she is] talking about" (288).

When was Starr's last trip to the courthouse?

When she was three she went to her dad's trial, her mom cried the whole way and she was also with uncle carlos. It was a difficult moment in her childhood and it permanently changed the feeling she got when going to a courtroom because it is where her dad was taken away from her for a few years.
