The preterite is used for actions in the past that are seen as completed, while the imperfect describes ongoing actions with no reference to their beginning or end.

Juan habló dos horas. Las chicas hablaban en inglés.

To conjugate regular -ar verbs in the imperfect:

aba abas aba ábamos abais aban

To conjugate regular -ar verbs in the preterite:

é aste ó amos asteis aron

To conjugate regular -ir and -er verbs in the preterite:

í iste ió imos isteis ieron

To conjugate regular -er and -ir verbs in the imperfect:

ía ías ía íamos íais ían
