Theory of Reasoned Action
Main idea of Theory of Reasoned Action
1. Behavior is not only dependent upon knowledge and beliefs, but also specific attitudes 2. Emphasizes that attitudes people hold toward a behavior (object) predicts whether a person intends to do a behavior. 3. Thus, the Theory of Reasoned Action, is really just a modification of the Health Belief Model and Field Theory.
Behavioral Intention
Attitude toward behavior + Subjective Norm associated with behavior = ___________________.
Attitude toward Behavior
Behavioral Beliefs + Evaluation of Behavioral Outcomes = __________________
Behavioral Belief
Belief that behavioral performance is associated with certain attributes or outcomes.
Attitude Toward Behavior
That doing a behavior results in a certain outcome (behavioral beliefs), and that there is a value in that outcome (evaluation)
Subjective Norms
The idea that people approve or disapprove of the behavior (Normative beliefs), and that it is important to the person to conform to the norm (motivation to comply)
Utility of "Tra"
To predict and explain a wide range of health behavior and intentions. To develop behavior change interventions. (Ex. Exercise, smoking, using condom)
Attitude toward performing behavior & Subjective Norm associated with behavior
Determinants of intentions are....
Attitude
Key Concept #1: A Person's positive or negative feeling about performing a specific behavior.
Subjective Norm
Key Concept #2: Beliefs about what others will think about the behavior.
Behavior Intention
Key Concept #3: Perceived Likelihood of performing behavior.
Behavior
Key Concept #4: A Specific behavior defined by four components: an action, a target, a context, and time
Intention
Most important determinant of behavior is the _______________ to perform the behavior (behavioral intention).
Motivation to Comply
Motivation to do what each referent thinks
Subjective Norm associated with behavior
Normative Beliefs + Motivation to comply = ____________________.
Normative Belief
The belief about whether each referent approves or disapproves of the behavior
Evaluation
Value attached to a behavioral attribute or outcome
Fishbein and Ajzen
Who developed the Theory of Reasoned Action?
To explain the cause of actual specific behavior.. including both inside and outside factor. To identify how and where to target strategies for changing behavior.
