true or false. a solar day is longer than a lunar day

false

define spring tides

has a very high high tides and very low low tides

define neap tides

has a very low tidal range

tidal bulges are located at the ___ and ________

nadir and zenith

how often does a blue moon occur

once every few years

explain how tidal bulge propagates around the earth during a lunar month

Tidal bulges are pulled by forces caused by the moon. As a result the tidal bulges move across earth's oceans to keep up with the tidal force of the moon.

explain why high tides and low tides are different heights

when tidal bulges hit wide margins, the height of the tide can be magnified

how often do spring tides occur?

twice a month, during new or full moons

how many times do high tides and low tides occur per lunar day

two high, two low

the full moon is followed by the ______ and _____ phases of the lunar cycle

waning, gibbous

in one solar day, how far does the moon move around the earth?

1/28th of a complete revolution

how often do neap tides occur?

1/4 moons twice a month

what is the duration of solar day?

24 hours

how long is a lunar day

24 hours and 50 minutes in duration

the new moon is followed by the ____ and _____ phases of the lunar cycle

waxing and cresent

define proxigean tides

are spring and perigee tides

explain why individuals in different locations on earth may experience 1 high tide and 1 low tide; 2 high tides and 2 low tides

because the earth rotates through two tidal bulges every lunar day, coastal areas experience 2 high and 2 low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes. High tides occur 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. Semidiurnal tides is a cycle that creates 2 high and 2 low tides every lunar day. the diurnal tide cycle creates 1 high and 1 low tide each lunar day along the east coast. Mixed tidal cycle creates high and low tides with different heights along the west coast. we experience different types of cycles because continents block the passage of the tidal bulges as the earth rotates

the moon's influence on earth's tides are greater than the ___

sun

define zenith

the gravitational force exerted on earth by the moon is greatest

what is the most important factor that causes ocean tides on earth is_______

the moon

define tidal bulges

the pull between the moon and earth that causes ocean waters to be pulled towards the moon

define tides

the rise and fall of sea level caused by graitational attraction of the moon and sun

define tidal range

the vertical difference between consecutive high and low tides

define nadir

the weakest gravitational force on earth by the moon

TIDES

tides are the regular rise and fall of the sea level. tidal bulges are the forces between the moon and earth that pull ocean waters towards the moon. There are two types of tidal bulges, nadir and zenith. Zenith is the strong force that is closest to the moon and the nadir is the weak force that is furthest from the moon. Because the moon is closer to earth it exerts more force than the sun. High and low tides are created as the earth constantly rotates tidal bulges. The monthly tidal cycle is 29 and a half days because that's how long it takes the moon to orbit around the earth. A lunar day is 24 hours and 50 minutes because the moon has to catch up with the earth's rotation. High tides occur every 12 hours and 25 minutes because they depend on the lunar day. A solar day is 24 hours long because that's how long it take the earth to make a full rotation around the sun.
