Timur Presentation Notes
•
Tamerlane was a master of military techniques used by Genghis Khan, using every weapon in the military and diplomatic arsenal. Most importantly the exploitation of enemies' weaknesses.
•
Tamerlane went by many names including Tamburlaine, Timur Lenk, and Timur all translating to "Timur the Lame." He got these nicknames because he walked with a limp he was paralyzed.
•
The Timurid Empire was comprised of modern-day Iran, the Caucasus, and Mesopotamia, Afghanistan. It was most of central Asia.
•
Unlike Muhammad, Timur did name a successor but, it lead to as many conflicts as leaving no successor since he left his children and grandchildren in charge.
•
He was born into a family of minor nobility, Rising to power after the Mongols left Persia and he viewed Chinngis Khan as his role model.
•
His first strategic move was conquering Persia and Afghanistan, the wealthy cities, so he could levy taxes on trade and agricultural production.
•
His story gave rise to many legends including ones that inspired Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine the Great and Edgar Allen Poe's Tamerlane.
•
In 1370 he turned against his brother in law Husayn after they conquered Transoxania and named himself the "Restorer" of the Mongol empire. Like his model Chinngis Khan he wasn't afraid to get kill or go against his family.
•
Since he never established and Imperial government he was constantly campaigning which never allowed his city, Samarkand, to become the greatest in Asia.
