Define Totalitarianism.

-A form of government in which all resources in society are controlled by the state. -Totalitarian regimes are controlled by one leader and one political party.

What was his vision for farming/industry in the Soviet Union.

-Collectivisation: Created collective farms to try and create more grain. They removed farmers from their personal farms and put them on state owned farms. This didn't work and the Reds ended up taking all the grain which caused a famine in Ukraine and Russia. -Five Year Plan: Industrialize Russia quickly and force people to do so. If they missed their quotas, they were killed or sent to jail/ Gulags.

Define Fascism

Fascism differs within each nation. There is no official definition. However, they share certain key characteristics: -Absolute Power of the State -Rule by a Dictator -Corporatism -Extreme Nationalism -Superiority of the Nation's People -Militarism and Imperialism

What was the Gulag? What did Stalin aim to achieve by creating the gulag?

Gulag: A group of labour camps where people were worked to death. Anything could send people there like being late for work or getting a tank stuck in the mud or not working to their full potential/not meeting a quota.

How had Stalin succeeded Lenin and rid his opposition?

He made his way to the top and and exiled/assassinated his opposition.

Identify the key traits for a totalitarian leader

-Dynamic leader (unites people, encourages loyalty, becomes symbol of government) -Ideology (justifies government actions, glorifies the state) -State Controls All Sectors of Society (business, labor, housing, family life, youth groups, religion, the arts) -State Controls Over the Individual (Demands total obedience and personal sacrifice, denies basic liberties) -Dependence on Modern Technology (uses mass communication for propaganda, builds up advanced military weapons) -Organize Violence (uses force/terror to crush opposition, targets certain groups as enemies)

Why/how was Mussolini a totalitarian dictator?

-Made other parties illegal -sparked nationalism -organized violence -controlled economy and education -gave emotional speeches -DISSDO besides depend on modern technology
