boiled (eggs)

(an oval or round object laid by a bird) that has been cooked in bubbling hot water E.g. When I go to the sauna and get hungry, my favorite thing to eat is boiled (eggs) with salt. I can eat 5 at once.

steamed (vegetables)

(edible plants) that are cooked with the hot gas that is created when water is boiled E.g. Although steamed (vegetables) are not always tasty, it's the healthiest way to cook carrots, peas, and broccoli.

fried (eggs / potatoes)

(food) that has been cooked in hot oil E.g. I love fried (eggs / potatoes) for breakfast. They go great with toast and sausage.

barbecued (beef)

(meat) that has been cooked over a fire often with sauce E.g. Smoked beef ribs are a typical southern style of barbecued (beef) that you can get in the United States.

stir-fried (noodles)

(pasta) cooked rapidly over a high heat while stirring briskly in oil E.g. Lo mein is a popular kind of stir-fried (noodles) with wheat pasta and vegetables.

grilled (shrimp)

(seafood) that has been cooked on a metal frame over a fire E.g. We bought seafood at the fisherman's market and made grilled (shrimp) on the barbecue in my backyard last night.

deep-fried (pastries)

(sweet dough) that has been cooked in a boiling tub of oil E.g. Donuts are very unhealthy deep-fried (pastries), but I eat them sometimes for breakfast.

(not) many

(the opposite of) a large number of things or people E.g. There are (not) many cookies left. Why don't you eat the last ones.

(not) enough

(the opposite of) a sufficient amount E.g. There is (not) enough milk for everyone to have cereal, but we can all have a small glass.

(not) much

(the opposite of) large in amount or extent E.g. There is (not) much fat in chicken, so it's good for people with high cholesterol.

(talk) too much

(to speak) more than needed E.g. I don't want to sit next to you in class. You (talk) too much. I can't hear the professor.

pickled (cabbage)

(vegetables) preserved with salt water or vinegar E.g. Kimchee is a kind of pickled (cabbage) with red pepper and sometimes fish sauce.

baked (potatoes)

(vegetables) which has been cooked in an oven E.g. Surely baked (potatoes) are much healthier than french fries because they aren't cooked in oil.

a liter of (soda / water)

1,000 cubic centimeters (about 1.75 pints) (of liquid) E.g. Just a liter of (soda / water) for 10 people is not enough to drink. You should buy 3 bottles.

a pound of (hamburger meat)

16 ounces or 0.4536 kilograms (of ground beef) E.g. This is a huge hamburger. There is a pound of (hamburger meat) in the paddy.

vegetable drawer

a box that slides into and out of a piece of furniture and that is used to store plants for eating E.g. My grandmother is very old-fashioned. She keeps onions, carrots, etc. in the vegetable drawer instead of the fridge.

orange

a citrus fruit that is round and that has an orange skin E.g. My favorite citrus fruit is orange. Lemons and limes are too sour and maderians are too hard to peel.

a can of (soup / soda)

a closed metal container that is usually shaped like a cylinder (and holds liquids) E.g. I like fresh foods and healthy drinks, but we keep a can of (soup / soda) in the kitchen just in case the refrigerator is empty.

a bag of (potato chips)

a container made of thin material that opens at the top (and contains fried slices of potato) E.g. Tom eats a bag of (potato chips) everyday at lunch, but the fried potatoes are high in cholesterol.

a box of (cereal)

a container that is made of a hard material with four straight sides (and holds breakfast food made from grain) E.g. I was so hungry this morning, that I ate a box of (cereal) and a quart of milk all by myself.

freezer

a device or room for keeping food cold enough to become a hard substance E.g. Someone left the freezer door open and now all the frozen food has melted.

a jar of (mustard / hot peppers)

a glass container that has a wide opening and usually a lid (and contains food or sauces) E.g. I made hot dogs. Grab a jar of (mustard / hot peppers). It tastes good with hotdogs.

a bottle of (soy sauce / ketchup)

a glass or plastic container that has a narrow neck (and contains tomato or black bean sauce) E.g. Would you pass a bottle of (soy sauce / ketchup)? I want to dip my dumplings in something.

mango

a juicy tropical fruit that has firm yellow and red skin E.g. In Thailand you can find mango trees everywhere. Green mangos are okay, but yellow mangos are the best.

a kilo of (rice)

a kilogram (1,000 grams) (of grain) E.g. We only have a kilo of (rice) left. Would you buy a 20 kilogram bag when you go to the store?

pineapple

a large fruit that grows on a tropical tree and has very sweet, juicy, yellow flesh E.g. Be careful during pineapple season in the tropics. The large fruits are so big that they injure people when the fall from the trees.

a carton of (juice / eggs)

a light box or container usually made of cardboard or plastic (and holds food or drinks) E.g. Would you buy a carton of (juice / eggs) at the store? I want to have orange juice and an omelet for breakfast.

apple

a round fruit with red, yellow, or green skin and firm white flesh E.g. It's fall, so we are going to go pick apples. Grandma is going to make apple pie and apple jam.

tomato

a round, soft, red fruit E.g. When I order pasta, I just order plain tomato pasta. I don't like cream or oil pasta sauce.

recipe

a set of instructions for making food E.g. The recipe in this cookbook says we need 5 tomatoes, not 3.

frozen dinner

a single-portion, prepackaged meal that is kept in the freezer and requires very little preparation before eating; also known as a frozen meal E.g. I don't have any fresh foods in the refrigerator, but I can heat up a frozen dinner in the microwave if you are hungry.

snack

a small amount of food eaten between meals E.g. I only have 10 minutes before my next class. I'm going to grab a quick snack at 7-11.

protein

a substance in meat, eggs, and milk necessary for growing strong bones and muscles E.g. Milk, fish, eggs, and meat are high in protein and help children develop strong muscles and bones.

spices

a substance that is used in cooking to add flavor to food E.g. My father has a sensitive stomach. He can't eat spices like pepper, curry, or chilli powder.

apple pie

a sweet food made from fruit baked in pastry E.g. We bought fresh apples. Mom is going to bake an apple pie.

a slice of (cheese)

a thin piece of food that is cut from a larger (block of a yellow or white solid food that is made from milk) E.g. Would you like a slice of (cheese) on your hamburger, like a cheese burger?

green pepper

a type of hollow vegetable that is green E.g. Mexican food, like fajitas and stuffed peppers contain a lot of green peppers.

calorie

a unit of heat used to indicate the amount of energy that foods will produce in the human body E.g. Pastries and fried foods are high in calories. Don't eat too much or you will gain weight.

broccoli

a vegetable that has green branches and many small green or purple flowers E.g. You can add broccoli and carrots to tomato sauce to make it healthier. Green broccoli contains a lot of vitamin E.

a little

a very small amount or degree E.g. I don't like sweets. But, I eat a little chocolate when I feel stress.

a tub of (margarine / butter)

a wide container (of a solid yellow substance made from milk or cream) E.g. The sizes are huge at Costco. They sell a three-pound a tub of (margarine / butter). It lasts for three months!

a package of (cookies)

a wrapper or container that covers or holds (sweet baked food) E.g. Don't eat a package of (cookies) all by yourself. Give some chocolate chips to your friends too.

fat

an oily solid or liquid substance in food E.g. Fried or fatty foods are high in fat. Eating too much will hurt your health.

filling

causing you to feel you have eaten all that is wanted E.g. I like dark beers, but they are so filling. I can only drink one or two and then my stomach is full.

pastry

dough that is used to make pies and other baked goods E.g. I love French pastry. I ate croissants and eclairs everyday when I was there.

a loaf of bread

flour and water that has been baked in one, long, round, or square shape E.g. Please by a loaf of bread at Paris Baguette. I will make sandwiches for lunch.

fast food

food that is prepared and served quickly E.g. I don't like fast food. I only go to McDonalds or Lotteria once a year.

kitchen cabinet

furniture that has doors and shelves and is located in the room in which food is cooked E.g. We have back pepper. Check the kitchen cabinet. It should be in there.

fridge

informal for refrigerator; a device or room that is used to keep things cold E.g. I think we have a liter of milk. Check in the fridge. It should be there.

very few

less than a few E.g. There are very few chiefs in the world who know how to make baked Alaska.

too much

more than needed; in excess of the needed amount E.g. I'm eating too much greasy food lately. My skin feels oily and I feel tired.

too many

more than needed; in excess of the needed number E.g. There are too many yummy desserts on the menu. We must order at least one.

two loaves of bread

more than one loaf (plural of loaf) E.g. There is a 1 + 1 special at Emart. You get two loaves of bread for the price of one loaf.

too (slowly)

not (as fast) as needed E.g. He cooks too (slowly). It takes him an hour just to cook dinner.

a few

not many E.g. I baked a few cookies for your birthday. Let's eat them.

fewer

not so many; a smaller number of (comparative form of few) E.g. I'm trying to eat fewer sweets in order to stay healthy.

less

not so much; smaller in amount or number (comparative form of a little) E.g. If you eat less and exercise, you will lose weight.

such as

of a kind that; like E.g. In Korea, there are many different kinds of Kimchi such as kkakdugi and baek‑kimchi.

ingredients

one of the things that are used to make a food or product E.g. We wanted to make fresh spaghetti sauce, but we don't have the ingredients. We are missing tomatos, oil, and pepper.

like

similar to E.g. I'm allergic to peanuts, so I can't have certain sweets, like fruit cake or Snickers bars.

very little

smaller or less than a little E.g. There is very little oil in this chicken, so it's not fattening.

treat

something that tastes good and that is not eaten often E.g. When we were kids, ice cream was rare. So it was a treat we ate on our birthdays.

carbohydrate

substances found in certain foods that provide your body with heat and energy E.g. Pasta, breads, and rice have a lot of carbohydrates. They are good to eat when you need energy.

dessert

sweet food eaten after the main part of a meal E.g. Tom has a sweet-tooth. He needs to eat a dessert, like ice-cream or cake, after every meal.

carrot

the long orange root of a plant that is eaten as a vegetable E.g. We brought carrots to the zoo to feed the rabbits. My hands were stained orange afterwards.

flavor

the quality of something that you can taste E.g. My favorite flavor is chocolate, but my brother's is vanilla.

some

to an unspecified amount or degree E.g. There are some eggs in the fridge, but I don't know how many. You should check.

lose weight

to become thinner E.g. I would like to lose weight. So I'm exercising everyday and eating healthy.

barbecue

to broil or roast over hot coals or an open fire E.g. My father just bought a fancy grill, so we eat barbecue chicken, pork, and beef every weekend.

roast (lamb)

to cook (meat) with dry heat in an oven or over a fire E.g. In many Muslim countries pork is forbidden and beef is too expensive, so people eat roast (lamb) when they want meat.

bake

to cook in an oven using dry heat E.g. My mother has a huge oven, she can bake two cakes at the same time.

fry

to cook in fat or oil E.g. It's healthier to steam or grill vegetables rather than fry them in oil.

boil

to cook in water that is boiling E.g. How long do we have to boil an egg in water to cook it fully?

grill

to cook on a metal frame over fire E.g. I loved the smoke flavor of grilled foods. They are healthy and flavorful.

roast

to cook with dry heat in an oven or over a fire E.g. My mother roasts a turkey in the oven every year for Thanksgiving Dinner.

steam

to cook, heat, or treat over boiling water E.g. Please don't steam the broccoli. It's gets soft and mushy. Grill it. Then it stays crunchy.

stir-fry

to fry quickly over high heat while stirring it constantly E.g. I watched the cook stir-fry the noodles. He used so much oil. I don't think I can eat the lo mein now.

improve your mood

to make you feel better E.g. Eating better can improve your mood. You will be happier and have more energy.

pickle

to preserve with salt water or vinegar E.g. Kkakdugi is a variety of Kimchi. You pickle radish in salt water and red pepper to make it.

smoked (fish)

treated over a fire to add flavor and prevent spoiling E.g. My favorite smoked (fish) is salmon. I like to eat it with cream cheese on bagels.

a quart of (skim milk)

two U.S. pints or 0.946 liters (of low fat milk) E.g. We are all out of milk. Please buy a quart of (skim milk) at the convenience store.

raw (fish)

uncooked (seafood) E.g. I'd like to eat sushi for dinner, but I know you don't like raw (fish), so what can we eat?

fresh fruit and vegetables

uncooked, newly ripened plants that are eaten E.g. Raw salad with a little bit of dressing is the best way to eat fresh fruit and vegetables.
