Scatter plot

A graph of plotting points that shows the relationship between two measurements. The vertical (up-and-down) line is the Y axis. The horizontal (left and right) is the X axis.

Vector

A measurement that has both a magnitude and direction.

Scalar

A measurement that has only magnitude and not direction.

Velocity

A factory quantity that describes the rate of change of position. In other words how fast it's moving.

Quantitative

A description or observation that uses examples. and numbers

Qualitative

A description or observation that uses words.

Variable

A measurement that is changed or observed for change in an experiment. It is also the letter or symbol used to represent the measurement.

Constant

A measurement that stays the same over time. A measurement that remains unchanged in an experiment.

Linear

A relationship that is constant and can be graphed as a straight line.

Position vs. Time Graph

A scatterplot that shows the position of an object at specific time intervals.

Conversion Factor

An equality between two different units that represent the same magnitude of a measurement.

Proper Units

In physics we use the International System of Units (SI). It is the most modern form of the metric system. Our three basic measurements in the SI system are mass, distance, and time. They are each measured in proper units of kilograms (kg), meters (m), and seconds (s).

Rate

The change of a measurement over time

Fence Post

The method we use to convert one measurement to another unit of the same measurement.

Magnitude

The size or scale of something. It includes a numerical measurement and unit.

Rest

The state of motion of an object that is not moving. The speed is zero.

Slope

When analyzing a graph, the slope is the change in the Y value divided by the X value. It tells you how much the graph prices compared to its run.
