Linguistic Feedback

Feedback that includes speaking, such as saying, "I agree" or "mmm-hmmm."

Paralinguistic Feedback

Feedback that refers to the use of pitch, loudness, and pausing.

Nonlinguistic or Extralinguistic Feedback

Feedback using eye contact, facial expression, posture and proximity.

Principle of Quantity

Sender provides the right amount and type of information needed by the receiver, uses clear and concise vocabulary, and is not redundant.

List 4 types of Communication disorders.

Speech disorder, hearing loss, swallowing and feeding disorders, and language disorders.

Define Modality.

The manner in which information conveyed via communication is transmitted and received. (Speech, signs, writing, etc.)

Define Transmission.

The process of conveying those ideas to another person, often by speaking but also by signing, gesturing, or writing.

Define Comprehension.

The process of making sense of the message.

Define Formulation.

The process of pulling together one's thoughts or ideas for sharing with another: What is the thought or feeling I want to share?

Define Reception.

The process of receiving the information from another person.

What is Communication?

The process of sharing information between two or more persons, or more specifically, "the transmission of thoughts or feelings from the mind of a speaker to he mind of the listener."

Principle of Relevance

The sender maintains the topic and uses appropriate transitions as needed; the sender communicates in a way that is appropriate to the situation and to their relationship with the receiver.

Principle of Quality

The sender shares information that is accurate. This includes use of linguistics, paralinguistics and extralinguistics.

Principle of Manner

The speaker speaks fluently without frequent hesitations or revisions, takes appropriate turns, pauses as needed but does not delay responses longer that called for, uses appropriate loudness and pitch, and engages in eye contact as expected by cultural norms.

The transmission of a message from one being to another. A symbolic and systematic means of communication shared by a community. The neuromuscular process by which a language is communicated.
