IF he let hareton fall and hit the ground it would've caused hindley a lot of pain and grief. He caught Hareton by instinct and if he had time to think about it he would've let him hit the ground.

When I think of the love that they had I don't think of the same type of love shared by Cinderella and Prince charming. Cathy and Heathcliffs love was very strange. They loved each other so much that they were miserable without each other and willing to change completely for the other person. They hated each other for the way they loved each other and in the end they were mad they didn't get to love each other more when it was their fault for not being able to do that.
