amphitheater (noun)

a large, round arena or staging area with tiered seating surrounding a central open area. Gladiators in Ancient Rome performed in amphitheaters so no one in attendance missed the action.

amphibian (noun)

an animal that lives both on land and in the water; also an aircraft that can make either a land or water landing. One of the most remarkable amphibians is the Chinese giant salamander, a creature that grows in length to five or more feet.

amphibious (adj)

belonging to both water and land; having two qualities or natures. The Duck was an amphibious vehicle put to use in transporting soldiers and supplies over land and water in World War II.

ambitious (adj)

eager to succeed or move forward. (Originally this word was associated with moving around and soliciting votes, but common usage has eliminated the political connotations). She sets ambitious five and ten-year goals so that she will not be stuck in an unsatisfying rut.

ambivalent (adj)

having mixed feelings about two people or things; conflicted in choosing between two courses of action. She felt ambivalent about her new brother; she loved him but also resented the attention everyone gave him.

ambiguous (adj)

having two possible definitions, answers, or meaning. The politician's answer to my question about raising taxes was ambiguous; he might or he might not vote to raise them.

ambivert (noun)

one whose personality is part introvert and part extrovert. Ambiverts have the best of both worlds; they are comfortable in crowds and happy at home alone.

ambidextrous (adj)

the quality of using either hand with equal ease. Bowlers who are ambidextrous have an easier time knocking down a split.

ambient (adj)

the surrounding atmosphere or environment. The ambient light created a romantic atmosphere.
