Groupthink

(Layman's Terms) The tendency to censor their own beliefs to preserve the harmony of the group. The mode of thinking that occurs when the desire for harmony in a decision-making group overrides a realistic appraisal of alternative.

Group Polarization

(Layman's Terms) When like-minded people share ideas, the outcome is likely to be more extreme than individual positions. The enhancement of a group's prevailing inclinations through discussion within a group. Internet communication magnifies this effect, for better and for worse.

Social Facilitation

Improved performance on simple or well-learned tasks in the presence of others. In social facilitation, the presence of others arouses us, improving our performance of easy tasks, but decreasing it on difficult ones.

Norm

An understood rule for accepted and expected behavior. Norms prescribe "proper" behavior.
