Asymmetrical

A feeling of balance attained when the visual units on either side of a vertical axis are actually different but are placed in the composition to create a " felt" balance in of the total artwork

Movement

A principle of design associated with rhythm referring to the arrangement of parts in an artwork to create a sense of motion to the viewer's eye through the work.

Variety

A principle of design concerned with the inclusion of difference in the elements of a composition to offset and add interest to an artwork.

Emphasis

A principle of design in which one element, or combination of elements, creates more attention than anything else in a combination.

Balance

A principle of design referring to the arrangement of visual elements to create stability in an artwork, there are four balance arrangements in art; asymmetrical, symmetrical approximately symmetrical, and radial.

Proportion

A principle of design reflecting the size relationship of parts to one another and to the whole.

Unity

A principle of design related to the sense of wholeness that results from the successful combination of the component elements of an artwork.

Rhythm

A principle of design that refers the ways of combining elements to produce the appearance of movement in an artwork, it may be achieved through alternation, repetition, or progression of an element.

Kinetic Art

Any art construction that contains moving elements that can be set in motion by action of gravity, air currents, motors, springs, or magnets

Composition

The act of organizing the elements of an artwork into a harmoniously unified whole

Implied Movement

The appearance of movement in a static artwork resulting from the artists use of elements such as: subject matter, line, shape, progression, repetition and alternation, running or pointing figures, etc.

Dominant

The most prominent or important form in an artwork

Pattern

The repetition of elements or combination of elements in a recognizable organization.

Continuation

The strategy for achieving unity in an artwork in which an element or series of elements that occur through a composition may direct the viewers attention from one place to another

Approximate symmetry

The use of forms that are similar yet different, on either side of a vertical axis
