Atoms, molecules, elements and compounds.
What is a molecule ?
A molecule is two or more atoms joined together by a chemical bond. They can be represented using a formula e.g. Hydrogen is H₂ and water is H₂O.
What is an atom ?
An atom is the basic unit of matter. They can be represented by using a symbol e.g. Iron is Fe
What are compounds made out of ?
Compounds are made out of two or more different types of atom. They CAN be broken down into simpler substances.
What does diatomic mean ?
Diatomic is the name given to a substance if it's molecules contain two atoms joined by a COVELANT BOND.
What are elements made out of ?
Elements are made out of only one type of atom. They CANNOT be brocken down into anything simpler.
Name the elements with diatomic molecules :
Hydrogen ( H₂ ) Nitrogen ( N₂ ) Fluorine ( F₂ ) Oxygen ( O₂ ) Iodine ( I₂ ) Chlorine ( Cl₂ ) Bromine ( Br₂ )
