What does standard deviation show for a set of data?

A measure of the amount of variation within a group or set of data using the same units as your data

Why did you apply a second nutrient treatment?

A second nutrient treatment was added on day 7 because the plants used up the old nutrients and in order to maintain a difference to study more nutrients had to be added.

What are the 3 key ingredients of the fertilizer you used to supply nutrients?

The three key ingredients are Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium.

What is the question our experiment today seeks to answer?

How much fertilizer will enable a plant to grow the tallest?

What is the role of nutrients in plant growth?

Plants use nutrients like potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus to build biomass and the nutrients help the plant with energy transfer.

Why is it important to have replicates in this and other experiments?

Replicates are important because in science you need multiple data points to show a claim and it helps in case of experimental error to have a large spread of data. Your research will also be more accurate with more data points because of the variation in plants

Write a statement stating your conclusion and show your p-value in parentheses to support your statement

The Control and Low treatment p-value (1.923E-06) rejects the Null hypothesis because the p-value is below .05 so the differences are due to outside influence and not natural variation.

What is the experimental control treatment?

The control plant treatment was the one that got only water and no fertilizer.

For the nutrient experiment you set up today, what are your dependent and independent variables?

The independent variable is the fertilizer and the dependent is the plant growth.

What is the difference between a dependent and independent variable?

The independent variable is the manipulated variable and the dependent reacts to it. In this lab the fertilizer is the independent variable and the plant growth is the dependent variable.

Water is a part of every plant but describe in your own words what happens to the majority of water that a plant takes up.

The majority of water taken up by a plant is lost through transpiration to keep the plant cool as well as other things. The rest of the water is used for photosynthesis in the plant.

Do the Control and Low treatments appear to be different due to random variation or due to the presence of fertilizer?

The presence/absence of nutrients in the treatment groups

In your own words, explain the real-world context motivating the experiment we are conducting for BIO 106

The real-world context is that the demand for rapeseed is greatly increased due to trade tariffs and Pullman is an area with a lot of rapeseed, so people want to be able to gather the maximum amount of seeds from each plant

Where does a plant get the majority of its carbon

Through Photosynthesis

Where does a plant get the majority of its nitrogen & phosphorus

Through the soil

What factors contributes to the plant's mass?

Weight from water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus all effect plant mass.
