Software Suite

A collection of separate application programs bundled together and made available as a group. Types- Office suites: contain general-purpose application programs that are typically used in a business situation (Microsoft Office) Cloud suites:stored at a server on the Internet and are available anywhere you can access the Internet. (Docs) Specialized suites: focus on specific applications. Utility suites: designed to make computing easier and safer.

App Stores

A website that provides access to specific mobile apps that can be downloaded free or w a fee.

Presentation Graphics

Programs that combine a variety of visual objects to create attractive, visually interesting presentations. Ex: Microsoft Power-Point, Apple Keynote, Google Slides, Corel Presentations, OpenOffice Impress, and Prezi.

Database Management Systems (DBMS)

A Database: a collection of related data, the electronic equivalent of a file cabinet. A program that sets up, or structures, a database. It also provides tools to enter, edit, and retrieve data from the database.

Desktop publishing programs

Allow you to mix text and graphics to create publications of professional quality. Focusing on page design and page layout. (brochures, newspapers, and textbooks)

Mobile Apps

Add-on programs for a variety of mobile devices including phones and tablets. Used for: listening to music(Spotify), video (YouTube), social networking (Facebook, Instagram), shopping (Amazon), and games (Role Playing Game or RPG)

Application software

Computer software created to allow the user to perform a specific job or task. 3 Categories- General-purpose applications: includes word processing programs, spreadsheets, presentation graphics, and database management systems. Specialized applications: includes programs that tend to be more narrowly focused and used in specific occupations. Mobile apps: add-on features or programs typically designed for smartphones and tablets.

Word Processors

Create text-based documents. Ex: Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, Google Docs, Corel WordPerfect, and OpenOffice Writer.

Spreadsheets

Organize, analyze, and graph numeric data such as budgets and financial reports. Ex: Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers, Corel Quattro Pro, Google Sheets, and OpenOffice Calc.

User Interface

Portion of the application that allows you to control and to interact with the program. Terms- Graphical User Interface (GUI): displays graphical elements called ICONS to represent familiar objects. Pointer: Used to select items such as icons with the mouse. A window: A rectangular area that can contain a document, program, or message.

Web authoring programs

Specialized and powerful programs used to create sophisticated commercial sites. WYSIWYG:What You See Is What You Get editors build a page without using HTML code.

Image editors

Specialized graphics programs for editing or modifying digital pics. Terms- Pixels:the thousand of dots that make up a photo to form an image.(bitmap, raster)

Illustration programs

Used to create and edit VECTOR images. Use geometric shapes or objects.

Video editors

Used to edit videos to enhance quality and appearance. Ex: Windows Live Movie Maker, Apple iMovie, and YouTube Video Editor.

Video game design Software

will help you organize your thoughts and guide you through the game design process including character development and environmental design
