Management Information System (MIS)

A coordinated system of processing and reporting information in an organization.

Computer virus

A program code hidden in a system that can later do damage to software or stored data.

Program

A series of detailed, step-by-step data instructions that tell the computer what functions to complete.

Computer language

A system of letters, words, numbers, and symbols used to communicate with a computer.

Expert system

Computer programs that help people solve technical problems.

Computer system

Four basic components that make up a computer system are: Input devices, processing units, memory and storage, and output devices.

Robotics

Involves mechanical devices programmed to do routine tasks, such as those in many factories.

Telecommuting

Involves the activities of a worker using a computer at home to do a job.

E-commerce

Refers to conducting business transactions using the Internet or other technology.

Software

Refers to the instructions that run the computer system. This includes word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and communications programs.

Application software

Refers to the programs that perform specific tasks such as work processing, database management, or accounting.

Computer-aided design (CAD)

Refers to the use of technology to create product styles and designs.

Artificial intelligence

Software that enables computers to reason, learn, and make decisions.

Piracy

Stealing or illegally copying software packages or information.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The control center of the computer.

The physical elements of a computer system are called the hardware. Examples are keyboards, cameras, microphones, etc.

The use of computers to help people learn or improve skills at their own pace.
