Circulatory System
How do we measure blood pressure?
The pressure of your blood is measured in millimeters of mercury, the pressure needed to lift a column of mercury.
Name the main artery and its branches their specific functions
The pulmonary artery is the main artery and it carries oxygen depleted blood from the heart to the lungs.
What is the circulatory system and how does it work?
The system that is responsible for transporting blood, gases, and nutrients throughout the body and removing waste from the human body. The heart pumps blood throughout the body, the vessels allow blood to flow through the body. These vessels include veins, arteries, and capillaries.
Where do capillaries branch off from and describe their physical features, and their function?
They branch off from arteries and have close proximity to cells. They have thin walls that allow diffusion, they provide cells with the food and oxygen they need, and transport waste products away.
What is another major function of the circulatory system? How does it do that?
to eliminate the waste as the blood passes close to cells it picks up the waste
What is the function of the circulatory system?
transport oxygen, blood cells, nutrients, and hormones to the tissues of the body
What does vascular mean?
vessels
How fast does blood flow through your veins?
3.5 mph
How much blood passes through these vessels every day?
Approximately 2,000 gallons of blood a day
Name the vessels that make up the network of pathways that transports and circulates blood throughout the body.
Arteries, veins, and capillaries are the different types of vessels.
Why do you think the breathing rate and heart rate increase and decrease at the same time?
As you breathe more, your heart rate increases in order to be able to distribute oxygen that quickly. As your breathing slows down, your heart can slow down because its oxygen is not needed as quickly.
The circulatory system has connections with other body systems and works with them to accomplish basic body functions. Describe the connections between the circulatory system and the respiratory, digestive, and excretory systems and how they accomplish their functions.
Respiratory system is connected through the lungs. Digestive system is related because that's where you digest your food and the blood cells grab the nutrients and waste from there. Excretory system is related because that is where the circulatory system delivers waste in the liver and kidneys.
What is the sequence that blood flows through your heart?
Right atrium Right ventricle Pulmonary artery Lungs Pulmonary vein Left atrium Left ventricle Aorta
What are the components of the circulatory system?
Right atrium, right ventricle, left ventricle, aorta, lungs, pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, left atrium
What would happen if you laid all the blood vessels end to end?
Go around the world twice
What caused the vein to pop out of the kid's head?
He breathes in and then acts to breathe out but then blocks the airways causing a lot of pressure to build up in his chest. So blood is being pumped into the left atrium and then up into his head but the blood flowing back to his chest has really low pressure, so it needs somewhere to go so it pools up in his veins.
What is hemoglobin and why is it important?
Hemoglobin is the reason that blood can collect oxygen.
What does the circulatory system do?
Provides oxygen and nutrients to our organs Helps us regulate our body temperature Transports waste products
The heart takes oxygenated blood through the body. How do the parts of the heart work together/ rely on each other to move the blood supply through the body?
The blood flows through the heart in a certain order and system. If one part is not working properly, the whole system is affected. The parts rely on one another for the circulatory system to work as it should.
How do the systems work together to eliminate body waste?
The circulatory system transports blood throughout the body, and as it flows it extracts waste from your body. Then, when the blood reaches the excretory system it deposits waste and the excretory system removes the waste.
What is the structure of the heart and how does it pump blood throughout the whole body?
The heart is a muscle that does important jobs. When the heart muscle releases oxygen, rich blood from the lungs fill the left atrium. At the same time, the right atrium fills with oxygen poor blood coming back from the body. Then the heart muscle contracts and blood is squeezed through the valves from the body through the atrium into the ventricles. When the ventricle contracts, blood from the right ventricle goes to the lungs to pick up oxygen. While blood from the left ventricle goes to supply oxygen to the rest of the body. As blood moves through the heart, the valve closes preventing blood to flow the wrong way.
Explain and describe veins' physical features, and their functions. Be sure to identify their specific names based on what they do.
Venules merge together to form veins and veins transport lower pressure blood to the heart so they don't need thick walls like arteries. Veins have valves to prevent the backflow of blood. The inferior and superior vena cava collect deoxygenated blood from the body and carry it to the heart. The pulmonary veins carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
What do the white and red blood cells do?
White blood cells fights infections Red blood cells gives it its color and carries oxygen
Red blood cell
a blood cell that carries oxygen to other cells in the body
Artery
a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Ventricle
a chamber in an animal's heart that pumps blood out to the body
billateral symmetry
a characteristic of organisms that can be divided in half along a midline yielding similar left and right halves
Capillary
a small blood vessel that transports nutrients and gases between the blood and tissues in an animal
Valve
an object that can permit or block the flow of material through some region
Muscle
an organ of the muscular system: Muscles can be either voluntary, such as a biceps, or involuntary, such as heart muscle
Vein (human body)
blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart
What is another name for the circulatory system?
cardiovascular system
What does the circulatory system depend upon and why?
depends on the lungs for importing oxygen and exporting carbon dioxide as part of the circulatory process
The heart is about the size of a ___________
fist
What are some key nutrients that blood transports?
glucose and fatty acids also carries hormones (not a nutrient)
What does cardio mean?
heart
Where is the waste taken? Where is carbon dioxide taken?
kidney and liver lungs
What are the two main types of blood cells?
red and white blood cells
