CNA Lesson 18 & 19 Oxygen/Devices/Interventions
What is one way to relieve shortness of breath?
Give oxygen
Prosthesis
Devices that replace a body part that is missing or deformed due to accident, injury, illness, or birth defect
What does flammable mean?
Easily ignited and capable of burning quickly
How often should you check the water levels of humidifiers or vaporizers?
Frequently and refill as needed
How should an Eye Prosthesis/Artificial Eye be stored when not in use?
In a clean container in the proper solution according to the instructions in the care plan or assignment sheet (distilled water or saline is common). The prosthesis will dry and crack if it isn't properly maintained.
How is liquid oxygen stored?
In a container similar to a thermos, since at extremely cold temperatures, oxygen changes from gas to liquid.
How should dentures be stored?
In a denture cup with cool water overnight in a safe place.
How should you store hearing aids when they are not in use?
In the case that is labeled with the residents name. If no case is available use a clean denture cup.
What are some symptoms of shortness of breath?
Increase respirations
How does the body respond to a lack of oxygen?
Increasing the rate and depth of respirations
What should a nursing assistant look for with residents receiving oxygen using a face mask?
Irritation around face
What should a nursing assistant look for with residents on a nasal cannula?
Irritation behind the ears, cheekbones, and nose.
Explain why oxygen is considered a drug.
It requires a doctors order
What is an important consideration when applying TED stockings?
Make sure they don't have wrinkles and they are comfortable
If a resident experiences shortness of breath, can a nursing assistant administer oxygen? Explain.
No. Only nurses and respiratory therapists can.
Are nursing assistants allowed to adjust the flow of oxygen in a residents room? Explain.
No. Only nurses or respiratory therapists can adjust.
What type of device changes air in the room into air with more oxygen?
Oxygen concentrator
Portable Oxygen
Oxygen that is stored as a gas under pressure in a cylinder equipped with a flow meter and regulator.
Amputation
Removal of some or all of a body part, usually as a result of injury or disease
Positive airway pressure devices
Respiratory ventilation used to treat breathing disorders and supply a constant pressure on inspiration and expiration. CPAP or BiPap
Phantom Pain/Sensation
Sensation of pain in a limb that has been amputated due to remaining nerve endings, feeling like the limb is still there
Hearing aids
Small battery-operated devices that fit into the ears to amplify sound
Elastic/Compression Stockings
Specialized hosiery designed to help prevent the occurrence of swelling and blood clots by compressing the limb and reducing the diameter of swollen veins so that the blood does not pool in the lower extremities.
What is another name for Elastic/Compression Stockings
Thromboembolic Deterrent Stockings or TED Hose
What is the purpose of Elastic/Compression stockings (TED Hose)?
To prevent swelling and blood clots cause by blood pooling in the lower extremities and improve circulation.
True or False. Residents should have dentures in their mouths for meals.
True
When is the most effective time for the compression stockings to be on a resident?
When the patient is out of bed and awake
Are nursing assistants allowed to turn off oxygen? Explain
Yes, but only in the case of a fire or another disaster.
What is oxygen therapy?
the administration of oxygen to increase the supply of oxygen to the lungs
What is combustion?
the process of burning
What percentage of oxygen is in room air?
21%
Face Mask
A clear plastic mask used for oxygen administration that covers the mouth and nose.
Humidifier
A device that creates a cool mist. Must be kept clean to prevent germs
Eye Prosthesis/Artificial Eye
A device that resembles the natural eye but does not allow a person to see
What is a nasal cannula?
A device that uses two prongs to deliver O2 throught the patients nostrils. W/ a flow rate of 1 - 6 lpm the nasal cannula can deliver 24-44% O2 concentration.
Vaporizor
A device that works by heating water until it turns into steam. Must be kept clean to prevent germs
Ventilator
A machine that supports breathing for people who can't breathe independently.
How often should a resident brush their dentures?
At least daily
How often should the nostrils be cleaned for a resident on a nasal cannula?
At least once per shift and check for skin irritation
How often should TED hose be removed from a resident?
At least twice daily for skin care unless otherwise indicated by physician
List 4 safety precautions when working with oxygen.
1. Remove fire hazards from room, never allow candles, open flames or smoking. 2. Don't use electrical equipment, a spark from electrical equipment can cause a fire 3. Don't use flammable products such as rubbing alcohol or oil-based products such as Vaseline near oxygen 4. Nursing Assistants should know how to turn off oxygen ONLY in the case of a fire or other disaster situation.
When a physician is writing an order to begin oxygen on a resident, what 3 things need to be included?
1. Amount to give 2. Method of delivery 3. When to use it
Explain the procedure for how to put TED hose on a resident.
1. Apply the hose before the resident gets out of bed 2. Hold heel of stocking and gather the rest in your hand turning hose inside out to mid foot area 3. Support foot at the heel and slip front of the stocking over the toes, foot, and heel. 4. Pull the stocking up until fully extended 5. Smooth away any wrinkles or twisted areas
List 4 types of prosthetic devices
1. Hearing aids 2. Eye prosthesis/Artificial Eye 3. Eyeglasses 4. Dentures
List 5 things the nursing assistant should remember when caring for a resident with an amputation.
1. Keep the skin under the device clean and dry 2. Check the skin on the stump for signs of pressure/irritation, i.e. redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, and skin breakdown. Report finding to nurse 3. Refer to the care plan and assignment sheet for instructions concerning applying, removing, and care of the prosthesis. 4. The prosthesis is specially made for and fitted to the resident, so it will be expensive. Show respect and concern when handling it. 5. If resident refuses to wear the prosthesis, respect their right and report to the nurse.
