What

- Before revolution, Russia is ruled by a monarchy (the czar) - The czar's powers were unlimited - He believed that he was the absolute ruler appointed by god - In 1917 during the month of March, there is large scale violence in Petrograd. The liberals overthrew the monarchy. This happened because the liberals were unhappy with Nicholas for keeping them in WW1 despite poverty and starvation at home. Nicholas is executed along with his family on July 17, 1918.

Why

He was the last Czar of Russia under Romanov rule. He is forced to abdicate by Petrograd insurgents and a provincial Government is installed in his place.
