shading

Adding black to any color will darken its value

tinting

Adding white to any color will lighten the color's value

The eyes perceive color because objects absorb some light waves and reflect others. We do not see the absorbed colors; we see the reflected colors.

Objects that appear multicolored are reflecting more than one color at the same time.

Mixing a complement with its hue will dull the hue and change the intensity of a color.

The more complementary color added, the duller a hue becomes. Eventually, the hue will lose its own color and appear to be gray.

monochrome

The word mono means one and the word chrome is a derivative of the Greek word chroma meaning color. Therefore, to create artwork using a monochromatic color scheme means using one color plus black and white or tints and shades of that one color.

To organize the colors in a work of art and minimize color chaos, artists use color schemes.

To organize the colors in a work of art and minimize color chaos, artists use color schemes. plans for organizing colors according to their relationship on the color wheel.

Colors are also considered to be either warm colors or cool colors

Warm colors are associated with sun, fire, and heat. Warm colors are red, orange, and yellow. Cool colors such blue, purple, and green are associated with water, ice, and green grass. Warm colors appear to come forward in artwork, whereas cool colors appear to recede.

White

White light is actually a combination of all colors

red

a stimulating color that creates excitement. It is usually associated with love or anger.

Hue

actual name of a color in the color spectrum, such as blue, yellow, or violet.

Intensity

brightness or dullness of a color. A color is at its fullest intensity directly from its original medium, such as a tube of acrylic paint.

Tertiary Colors

called the intermediate colors, are the combinations of the secondary colors with a primary color. They are yellow-orange, yellow-green, red-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, and blue-green.

Following a color scheme can create a particular mood or overall feeling in artwork. Some of the most commonly used

color schemes are complementary colors, analogous colors, triadic colors, monochromatic colors, and split complementary colors.

color triad

composed of three colors spaced an equal distance apart on the color wheel. The primary triad is composed of red, yellow, and blue. The secondary triad is composed of green, violet, and orange.

color blue

considered to be an appetite suppressant because so few foods are naturally blue in color. Blue is also considered to be a melancholy color. The genre of music known as "the blues" implies emotions of loneliness and sadness.

Secondary Color

derived from mixing certain amounts of the primary colors together. The secondary colors are orange, green, and violet (also called purple).

color

derived from reflected visible light. The eyes see color because certain light waves are reflected from an object

Analogous colors

eighboring colors, are next to each other on the color wheel. Red, red-orange, and orange are analogous colors. Their common hue is red. Analogous color schemes create artwork that ties the composition together with a common color.

All colors have three properties

hue, value, and intensity

Value

lightness or darkness of a color. The amount of light a color reflects determines its value.

Color

one of the most important elements of art because of its power to evoke instant emotional reactions in people. Almost every color can be associated with a particular feeling or emotion.

There are three major groups of color

primary colors, the secondary colors, and the tertiary (intermediate) colors.

color spectrum

seen when light passes through a prism. The prism bends the beam of light into separate bands of color.A rainbow is a natural example of the color spectrum. The colors in the spectrum always appear in the same order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Color creates mood, expresses feelings, creates patterns, and gives a sense of movement or balance to a composition

the color of a room can affect a person's mood, attitude, and behavior. The color green is associated with peace and tranquility.

Split complements

the combinations of one hue and the hues on each side of its complement.

Complementary colors

colors that are across from each other on the color wheel. The complement of a hue absorbs all the light waves that the hue reflects. The complementary sets are red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and violet. Artists use complementary colors as one type of color scheme in which to paint. Complementary color schemes create harmony and vibrancy in a work of art.

Primary Colors

colors, in traditional color theory, that cannot be formed by mixing any other colors together. All other colors are derived by combinations of the primary colors of blue, red, and yellow.
