Energy
Law of conservation of energy
Energy can be changed from one form to another. total amount of energy in a system is constant. And it stays the same.
What are the different forms of Energy?
Energy can be present in different forms or in a combination
electrical energy
deals with movement of electrons from and area of high pe to low pe, current and voltage
law of conservation of mass
energy cannot be created or destroyed. can only be converted from one form to another.
Chemical Potential Energy
energy stored in the bands between atoms, energy stored in food, energy stored in batteries
What could be used to convert light energy to electrical energy
solar cell
Potential energy
stored energy
Gravitational Energy
stored energy due to the position of an object height above the ground weight lifting
Elastic Potential Energy
stored energy when a material is stretched or compressed rubberband
what is energy?
the ability or capacity to do work. Energy is never created.
PE can be converted to KE and then back again
when this happens, some of the energy is changed to heat/thermal energy due to friction. Energy transformations are not 100% efficient.
conservation of energy when a baseball is thrown from one player to another
1. a baseball player converts chemical energy from food to mechanical when she moves her arm to throw the ball 2. the work done on the ball converts the energy of the arm movement to kinetic mechanical energy of the ball 3. when the second player catches the ball, the ball does not on the players hand and the glove giving them some mechanical energy. the ball also moves the molecules in the glove heating them up 4. the player that catches the ball absorbs the energy of the ball and this energy turns to heat 5. the total heat produced is equal to the energy used to throw the ball
conservation of energy in a flashlight
1. battery has chemical potential energy 2. chemical energy changes due to electrical energy 3. electric energy flows through the lightbulb and turns electric energy to light and heat
Chemical Energy
a type of energy is associated with atoms, ions, and molecules and the chemical bond that these particles form. When a chemical reaction happens, energy changes to another form (batteries store energy, body stores energy from food, photosynthesis)
light energy
associated with electromagnetic wave, does NOT need a medium to travel through. Can be transmitted through space. Sun gives us energy (also source of nuclear energy known as nuclear fusion)
Sound energy
associated with longitudinal waves , sound needs a medium to travel, it will not be transferred through space
the stored energy in a battery could be described as
chemical
thermal energy
heat, associated with movement of particles. Friction can cause ke to be converted to thermal energy
Mechanical Energy
is due to the positions or the movement of something. It can be potential (stored energy), kinetic (energy of movement), or the sum of the two.
what kind of energy does a windmill use to work
mechanical
