Explain the moral dilemma Pepys recounts involving a young child at the end of his 1665 entry. Do you think they made the right decision?

The moral dilemma was that the child was from an infected house, the rest of his family dead, or dying. The child was taken in by a man, who then clothe the child with new clothes, with intentions to save the child, he took the child in. I think they made the right decision, if the child was not infected, and was given new belongings instead of taking his infected belongings, the child should not pose as much of a threat. It is better to save the child then to let him die. Pepys discusses the issue of a man and his wife deciding to give up the last living child to another family because they had buried all their other children because of the plague. They only wanted the child to live.

It can be seen in this sentence "I calculate there may be about two hundred thousand couple, whose wives are breeders;" One can also see how he wrote about people like they were objects to be sold in this sentence "I am assured by our merchants, that a boy or a girl, before twelve years old, is no saleable commodity, and even when they come to this age, they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds and half a crown at most, on the exchange; which cannot turn to account either to the parents or kingdom, the charge of nutriments and rags having been at least four times that value. Paradise Lost deals a great deal with knowledge. It asks the following questions: how much knowledge should we humans aspire to? Is knowledge a curse? Is it wrong for us to use our minds? In your opinion, what is the poem's final message about knowledge? Use examples from the text to prove your interpretation.

In my opinion the poem's final message about knowledge is that it is good to have a certain amount of knowledge, but too much knowledge may lead to the downfall of one. Adam and Eve had knowledge of life, they knew the animals name, they knew who God was, they knew rules and obedience and many more simple knowledge. Knowing this simple knowledge would have allowed them to live a good life had it not been for the fall. Satan deceives Eve and tricks her with false knowledge, thus leading to her eating the fruit. This led to them knowing that they are no longer innocent and are naked, this series of events led them to leaving the garden of Eden. So, having knowledge is good, but too much may lead to one's downfall.

Since Swift mocks abusive and dehumanizing behavior, what kinds of attitudes do you think he would rather see extended to the poor? In other words, what do you think his real proposal would be? Use examples from the text to support your position.

In the first few sentences, he writes "It is a melancholy object to those, who walk through this great town, or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabbin-doors crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags, and importuning every passenger for an alms. ", this shows his empathy, where he feels pity for those begging. He writes in a manner from the wealthy's perspective, showing the lack of empathy for them, I think his real proposal would be to see the wealthy reach out to help the poor. He mocks them in this sentence ""I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title to the children." He would also propose that England stop oppressing the Irish people and that Ireland stop being submissive.

A foil is a character set up to contrast with another character. In Paradise Lost, how is the Son of God (Jesus) a foil to Satan in personality or deed? Provide two examples from the text.

Satan wants to destroy God's work(creation) , he does not want to give in to the will of God while Jesus is fully submitted to the will of God. " When I treat of the peculiar duties of women, as I should treat of the peculiar duties of a citizen or father, it will be found that I do not mean to insinuate that they should be taken out of their families, speaking of the majority. 'He that hath wife and children,' says Lord Bacon, 'hath given hostages to fortune; for they are impediments to great enterprises, either of virtue or mischief. Certainly the best works, and of greatest merit for the public, have proceeded from the unmarried or childless men.' I say the same of women. But, the welfare of society is not built on extraordinary exertions; and were it more reasonably organized, there would be still less need of great abilities, or heroic virtues." When she treats the duties of women, just as she treats the duties of a citizen or father, one can see that she does not mean that they should be removed from their families. She then quotes Lord Bacon, stating that those men who remained unmarried have more benefits. She then proceeds to agree that the same for women. The consequence is that the wife has to be cunning in order to undermine the habitual affection of which is afraid to oppose openly, this leads to a lot of suffering and pain, where the women is thrown out into the world, into a place of joyless solitude, uneducated about the things of the world and not prepared for the difficulties.

One difference was that John's writing seemed as if the fire did not affect him, he was telling it from a perspective where he was observing the people around him while Samuel's wrote his feelings and actions about the things he had to do because the fire affected him. One similarity between the two was how one could read the despair in both accounts. Samuel felt a lost for the goods while John wrote of the cries of the people.

Provide one of Wollstonecraft's ideas that you agreed with, and why. Then, provide one of Wollstonecraft's ideas that you disagreed with, and why.

One idea that I agreed with is that women should be educated, and are not to be degraded. I'm not saying that they have to be equal to men, because God did create men to be the head of the households, but that women be treated like human beings, and with respect. I agreed with this because I feel that there are certain situations where women is not being treated well, and I believe that it is basic human decency to treat women with a certain level of respect. I feel that God created women not be degraded but to be loved. I disagreed with the idea that all men are tyrants and that the women in his life are slaves to him, I believe that there are men out there that do treat women well, and are brought up well. The way that she portrayed men was in a bad light, and maybe in those times, there were a lot of extreme sexism, where women were taught to be submissive and men could mistreat women but I believe that times are slowly changing, where better values are taught to the men in this society.

Let their faculties have room to unfold, and their virtues to gain strength, and then determine where the whole sex must stand in the intellectual scale."

Up to till now, she had avoided comparing the two genders directly, or acknowledge the inferiority of women, but seeing how she looked at the current situation, she insisted that men have only continued to make women even more inferior to men, to the point where the female are not even thought of as humans. She states that if women were allowed to show their inherent mental/physical power, let their virtures strengthen, only then are people allowed to judge the intelligence of women.
