Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole part of the answer will be the whole number of the mixed fraction. The remainder will be the new numerator. The denominator stays the same. Example: 9/2 = ? 9 ÷ 2 = 4 r1 → 9/2 = 4½

Step 1. Multiply the denominator by the whole number. Step 2. Add the numerator. Step 3. Put the result over the original denominator. Example: 5¾ = ? 4×5 = 20 → 20+3 = 23 → 5¾ = 23/4

How do we convert mixed numbers into improper fractions? Example: 5¾ = ?

Multiply or divide the top and bottom of the fraction by the SAME number. Example: 2/5 × 3/3 = 6/15 2/5 and 6/15 are equivalent.

How do you turn a fraction into an equivalent fraction?

Find the equivalent fraction with the smallest possible numerator and denominator. Example: What is the reduced form of 12/40 ? Answer: 3/10 (The numerator and denominator of the original fraction were each divided by 4.)
