First find equivalent fractions that have the same denominators. Examples: 1/6 + 5/3 = 1/6 + 10/6 = 11/6 6/7 - 2/3 = 18/21 - 14/21 = 4/21

How can we add or subtract fractions that have DIFFERENT denominators? Examples: 1/6 + 5/3 6/7 - 2/3

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole part of the answer will be the whole number of the mixed fraction. The remainder will be the new numerator. The denominator stays the same. Example: 9/2 = ? 9 ÷ 2 = 4 r1 → 9/2 = 4½

How do we convert an improper fraction into a mixed number? Example: 9/2 = ?

Step 1. Multiply the denominator by the whole number. Step 2. Add the numerator. Step 3. Put the result over the original denominator. Example: 5¾ = ? 4×5 = 20 → 20+3 = 23 → 5¾ = 23/4

How do we convert mixed numbers into improper fractions? Example: 5¾ = ?

Multiply or divide the top and bottom of the fraction by the SAME number. Example: 2/5 × 3/3 = 6/15 2/5 and 6/15 are equivalent.

How do you turn a fraction into an equivalent fraction?

Find the equivalent fraction with the smallest possible numerator and denominator. Example: What is the reduced form of 12/40 ? Answer: 3/10 (The numerator and denominator of the original fraction were each divided by 4.)

What does it mean to reduce a fraction to lowest terms?

The BOTTOM part of a fraction.

What is the denominator?

The TOP part of a fraction.

What is the numerator?

Add or subtract the numerators but keep the denominator the same. Examples: 5/9 + 2/9 = 7/9 5/9 - 2/9 = 3/9

What is the rule for adding or subtracting fractions with the same denominator? Examples: 5/9 + 2/9 5/9 - 2/9

Keep the numerator the same and multiply the denominator by the number. Example: 5/12 ÷ 3 = 5/36

What is the rule for dividing a fraction by a number? Example: 5/12 ÷ 3

MULTIPLY by the RECIPROCAL. Examples: 2/5 ÷ 7/11 = 2/5 × 11/7 = 22/35 8 ÷ 7/11 = 8 × 11/7 = 88/7

What is the rule for dividing by a fraction? Examples: 2/5 ÷ 7/11 8 ÷ 7/11

Multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. Example: 4/9 × 7/2 = 28/18

What is the rule for multiplying a fraction by a fraction? Example: 4/9 × 7/2

Multiply the number with the numerator first and then divide by the denominator OR divide the number by the denominator first and then multiply by the numerator. Example: 6×(4/3) = 24/3 = 8 OR 6×(4/3) = 2×4 = 8

What is the rule for multiplying a number with a fraction? Example: 6×(4/3)
