Employer responsibilities

Ergonomics

hazardous communication standards
Requires all employers to maintain information at each work site that describes any chemical hazards that may be present on -site. A new set of Hazardous Communication Standards (HCS) was established in 2012. All employers with hazardous chemicals are required to have a hazardous communication program, including container labels, safety data sheets, and employee training
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act)
Requires employers to pursue workplace safety. Employers must meet OSHA standards and maintain records of death and injuries and submit to on-site inspections when notified.
OSHA
THe division within the dep of lab that is charged with overseeing the OSH Act. Created to assure safe and healthful working conditions by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance. Broad authority to investigate complaints and impose citations and penalties on employers who violate the OSH Act.
The general duties clause
covers all employers states that each employer: 1. shall furnish a place of employment that is free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious injury 2. shall comply with occupational health and safety standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued to this act which are applicable to his own actions and conduct Each employee has a duty to comply with occupational safety standards, rules, and regulations

prevention of violence
number one prevention method is to train all employees to deal with anger and prevent violence. Take quick disciplinary actions against employees who are violent at work. Have system for grievances and also track incidents of violence as part of policy. Use background checks, web searches, and credit checks to prevent negligent/dangerous hires. Substance abuse prevention is an essential element of an effective workplace safety and security program.

OSHA violations
