Smooth muscle

Function: Involuntary movement of internal organs Location: Walls of hollow internal organs (ie. digestive tract)

Nervous Tissue

Function: Sensory reception and conduction of electrical impulses Location: brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves

Function: absorption, secretion protection Location: uterus, stomach, and intestines

transitional epithelium

Function: distensibility and protection Location: urinary bladder and urethra

Areolar Tissue

Function: binds organs Location: between muscles, below skin, beneath epithelial tissue

Dense Connective Tissue

Function: binds organs Location: tendons (connects muscles to bones) and ligaments (connects bones)

simple squamous epithelium

Function: filtration, diffusion and osmosis Location: air sacs of lungs, walls of capillaries, linings of blood and lymph vessels.

Cardiac Muscle

Function: heart movement (involuntary) Location: heart

stratified cuboidal epithelium

Function: protection Location: linings of larger ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands, and pancreas.

stratified squamous epithelium

Function: protection Location: outer layer of skin; linings of oral cavity; throat, vagina, and anal cavity

Adipose Tissue

Function: protects, cushion and insulate the body Location: beneath skin, within muscle, around kidneys and heart, some joints and behind eyeballs

Cartilage

Function: provides frameworks, support and attachments, protects underlying tissues and forms models for developing bones Location: ears, nose, ends of bones, pads between vertebrae

Bone

Function: structural support for body, protects internal organs Location: skeleton

Function: protection, secretion Location: part of the male urethra and parts of the pharynx

pseudostratified columnar epithelium

Function: protection, secretion, movement of mucus Location: linings of respiratory passages

Blood

Function: transport substances, helps maintain stable internal environment Location: throughout body within a closed system of blood vessels and heart chambers

Skeletal Muscle

Function: voluntary movements of skeletal parts Location: Muscles usually attached to bones
