Increasing the length of a bone
zone of calcification (blood vessels)
-blood vessels from diaphysis grow into area -tissues near blood vessels contain Osteoblasts -osteoblasts deposit new matrix on calcified cartilage and grow through appositional bone growth
Zone of Hypertrophy
-chondrocytes from proliferation MATURE and ENLARGE -cells furthest from epiphysis are older and larger
zone of Resting Cartilage
-contains randomly arranged, SLOW dividing Chondrocytes (cartilage cells) -nearest to epiphysis
zone of Proliferation
-produces new cartilage -chondrocytes divide and form columns resembling STACKS of coins
zone of Calcification
-very thin and contains hypertrophied chondrocytes and calcified cartilage - hypertrophy chondrocytes DIE
Increase in bone length contains what two things?
1) Formation of new cartilage 2) appositional bone growth
What four zones make up the epiphyseal plate? (From closest to epiphysis to closest to diaphysis)
1) zone of Resting Cartilage 2) zone of Proliferation 3) zone of Hypertrophy 4) zone of Calcification
Long bones and bony projections increase in length because of growth from where?
The epiphyseal plate
Between 12- 15 years of age what happens in terms of bone growth?
Ossification catches up with epiphyseal plate and it becomes the epiphyseal line (bone STOPS growing in LENGTH)
