Standing wave

A wave that appears to stand in one place ( even though it is two waves interfering as they pass through each other).

Resonance

An increase in the amplitude of a vibration that occurs when external vibrations match an object's natural frequency.

Interference

Interactions between waves ( Note: there are two types of interference: Constructive and Destructive).

Constructive interference

Occurs when a wave combines to make a wave with a larger amplitude.

Destructive interference

Occurs when two wave combine to make a wave with a smaller amplitude.

Refraction

The bending of a wave caused by a change in its speed as it moves from one medium to another.

Diffraction

The bending of waves around a barrier or through an opening.

Reflection

The bouncing back of a wave when it hits a surface through which it cannot pass.

Antinodes

The point of maximum amplitude on a standing wave( only occurs halfway between nodes).

Law of Reflection

When a wave enters a new medium at an angle ( one side of the wave changes speeds before the other side, causing the wave to bend).

Nodes

the point of zero amplitude in a standing wave.
