Itec chapter 4
Twisted pair
A common telephone wire which is comprised of a pair of thin copper wires with an insulated cover. The twisting allows their electromagnetic fields to cancel each other out so that there is minimal interference.
network
A group of two or more devices/computers connected together to allow for the exchange and information and for the sharing of resources such as printers.
Packet switching
A method for transferring information that differs from circuit switching because data transfer that doesn't rely on a dedicated physical path.
IP address
Allows other computers on the Internet to send it to your computer. When you log off the Internet your ISP may assign the IP address to another subscriber.
Ethernet Cable
Also known as computer cable, it connects computers and digital devices. It is comprised of multiple pairs of telephone wires wrapped together and insulated.
Client/server
Also referred to as server-based networks, they are designed to have individual computers and devices connected to the network interact through a central server computer
Microwaves
Another transmission medium for Internet signals. They are used to transmit signals over extremely long distances, including to and from satellites.
Dual band routers
Are wi-Fi capable routers that use both shorter and higher frequency signals to transmit data.
Electronica data interchange EDI
Communication standards for business transactions. It allows for the exchange of data for making purchase orders and invoices. Nearly all businesses that participate in e-commerce use EDI.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Creates a secure connection between two computers. It allows for encrypted communications using the Internet as a pathway for data transmission in communication.
Transmission media
Describes the mean by which the Internet signal is carried. Examples include telephone lines, fiber optic cables, ethernet cable, microwaves, etc.
SSID (Service Set Identifier)
Every Wi-Fi signal is recognized according to its service set identifier. The router transmits this SS ID every few seconds so that someone roaming for Wi-Fi signal can find it.
Switch
K'NEX devices that are with in the same network. They ensure that the correct data is sent to and from the correct device with in the network.
coaxial cable
Known as the television cable it is compromised of a single copper wire with a braided wire shield, wrapped in insulation. It is capable of high speed Internet transmission, they're not as fast as fiber optic cable, it is relatively inexpensive to install.
LAN
Local area network is a collection of computers that are connected in a small geographic area such as a home an office or a college campus
Satellite Internet
Makes broadband Internet available virtually anyway. He uses microwaves to transmit and receive Internet signals to satellites orbiting the earth equator
Router
The most critical part of your home network, a router connects two networks like your home network to the Internet.
WPA
The short-lived a security standard that was put into affect in 2003, but security flaws resulted and it's being replaced in less than a year with WPA2.
Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)
Uses computers and various technologies in place of checks and other paper transactions to transfer funds. Governed by the federal electronica funds transfer act
Fiber optic
Uses light waves to carry Internet signals at extremely high speeds. It is composed of them glass wire wrapped in cladding and insulation it is particularly useful for transmitting signals over long distances.
Modem
Usually provided by the Internet service providers, modems have Internet signals that travel in waves.
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
Was the original security protocol for Wi-Fi networks. The intent was to provide Wi-Fi users with the same confidentiality they would have in a wired network.
Remote Access
When there are times when it is necessary to allow an outside connection to an LAN this is referred to as remote access. Remote access connections must be secured using authentication and encryption software.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
When two or more LANs have been connected using a public network a wide area network is created. The largest WAN on earth is the Internet
WPA 2
Wi-Fi protected access version two, is the current Wi-Fi security encryption standard.
