Actual Loss

any loss of a person or object that can no longer be felt, heard, known, or expereinced. EX: loss of body part, borum losing her earrings

Maturational Loss

change in development process that is normally expected during life. part of normal life transitions EX: parents dropping their kids off at school EX: dad giving away daughter at wedding

coping

cope w/ grief after a loss involves the process of mourning (the outward social expression of loss) what's socially acceptable when you experience loss ex: our generation uses social media to cope

emotional response to loss

Bereavement

includes grief and mourning the inner feelings and outward reaction sof the survivor no on ever "gets over" a loss, but hte person can heal and learn to live with the loss

Necessary Losses

integral part of each person's life EX: it is necessary to break up with your first boyfriend, it is part of growing up

Disenfranchised grief

loss is experienced, but cannot be openly acknowledged, socially sanctioned, or publicly shared. Ex: partner with HIV, mother whose child dies in utero or at birth

Perceived Loss

loss that is uniquely defined by the grieving client. may be less obvious to others easily overlooked or misunderstood, but follows same sequencin and progressions as actual loss EX: you lose your 4.0 gpa

complicated grief

person has trouble progressing through the stages of grief. bereavement appears to go wrong and loss is never resolved 4 types

anticipatory grief

process of letting go before an acutal loss has occured. Ex: person recieves a terminal diagnosis and begins the process of saying goodbye. By the time of the actual death, much of the shock, denial, and tearfulness have already been experienced

Situational Loss

sudden, unpredictable external events Ex: automobile accident leaves driver paralyzed

normal grief

uncomplicated normal feelings, behaviors, and reactions to loss might include resentment, sorrow, anger, crying, loneliness, & temp. withdrawal from activities
