Physical Needs ( First level ) - foundation of a person's motivational drive

- basic needs, including air, food, water, and shelter - necessary for survival - when achieved, physical needs bring about homeostasis( balance) to the body - when not achieved, the person may experience illness, pain, and irritation

Safety and security needs ( second level )-a person's physical needs are already met.

- psychological needs, including feeling safe from harm and feeling secure about safety - when achieved, safety and security needs bring a sense of stability and consistency - when not achieved, safety is not ensured and the person must be on "guard"

Self-actualization ( fifth level)- physical, safety, social, and self-esteem needs are already met.

- the need of persons to "be all they can be"(to of their best and accomplish their goals) - as the most advanced level, self-actualization may never be reached because to deals with becoming the absolute best a person can be

Social Needs ( third level )- a person's physical and safety needs are already met.

- the need to feel loved and appreciated; the need to feel a sense of belonging - when achieved, social needs bring friendship and companionship - when not achieved, disappointment and loneliness may result

Self- esteem ( fourth level)- physical,safety, and social needs are already met.

- the need to feel worthwhile and good about oneself - affected by attention and recognition from others - when achieved, self-esteem creates a sense of being in control - when not achieved, there may be a lack of appreciation for others or oneself
