Math Definitions
counting numbers
numbers used to count, AKA natural numbers
Factor pair
A factor is two numbers that multiply each other, these two numbers is called factor pair. 2*6=12 2 and 6 are factor pair
Common factors
A factor that two or more numbers share. factors of 20: 1,2,4,5,10,20 factors of 30: 1,2,3,5,6,10,15,30 common factors of 20 and 30 are: 1,2,5,10
Prime Factorization
A product of prime numbers resulting in a desired number.
Prime Numbers
A whole number greater than 1, whose only two factors are 1 and itself. 2,3,5,7,11...
Composite Numbers
A whole number with factors other than itself and 1. Or a whole number that is not a prime number. 10: 1,2,5
Proper Factors
All of the whole numbers factors of a number not including the number itself. 12: 1,2,3,4,6
Common multiples
Examples: multiples of 20: 20,40,60,80,100,120,140,160,180... multiples of 30: 30,60,90,120,150,180... common multiples of 20 and 30: 60,120,180
Factors
Factors are the whole numbers you multiply together to get another number. 12: 1,2,3,4,6,12
The product of two numbers equal to their LCM
Given two numbers, if they cannot be simplified anymore, their product equals to their least common multiple.
Greatest common factor (GCF)
The biggest common factor
Multiple
The product of that number and another whole number. 10 is a multiple of 5 because 5*2=10
Least common multiple (LCM)
The smallest common multiple. common multiples of 20 and 30: 60,120,180 60 from the above example
divisor
a number by which another number is divided
minuend
a number from which another number is subtracted.
variable
a number that can change or assume different values; a letter used to represent an unknown value
dividend
a number that is divided
subtrahend
a number that is subtracted
decimal point
a symbol in a decimal number used as a reference point for place value.
divisible
able to be divided by a whole number without a remainder.
quotient
answer to a division problem
product
answer to a multiplication problem
sum
answer to an addition problem
operations of arithmetic
four basic mathematical operations: +, -, *, /
natural numbers
numbers used to count
factor
one of two or more numbers that are multiplied
factors
one or more numbers that are multiplied
common factor
two numbers that have the same factor
difference
result of subtraction
addends
two or more numbers that are part of an addition problem
greatest common factor
the largest whole number that is a factor of two or more specific numbers.
whole number
the number of the set: 0,1,2,3, etc.
comparison symbol
the symbol used to show the comparison of two numbers greater than, less than or equal
compare
to determine whether a number is greater than, less than, or equal to another number.
evaluate
to find the value of an expression answer
align
to line up, as in decimal points or commas.
