Module 2 - Statistics & Data Analytics for Health Data Management
How many grams are in 1 kg? a. 100 b. 10,000 c. 1,000 d. 10
1,000
A bulk supply of gauze contains 84 rolls. In the past day, the emergency room department has consumed 21 rolls of gauze. What fraction of the gauze was consumed? Reduce this fraction to its most simple form. a. 1/4 b. 21/84 c. 84/21 d.3/4
1/4
Sally can code six charts in 1 hour. What is the ratio of minutes to charts? a. 10 minutes:1 chart b. 1 minutes:10 charts c. 1 chart:6 minutes d. 6 minutes:1 chart
10 minutes: 1 chart
The larger the standard deviation, the data tends to _______________________. a. be more varied from the mean b. have a wider range c. be more similar to the mean d. have a smaller range
be more varied from the mean
A bulk supply of gauze contains 84 rolls. In the past several days, the emergency room department has consumed 4/5 of the supply. How many rolls of gauze are remaining? a. 16.8 b. 12.4 c. 14.2 d. 10.6
16.8 (Divide 4/5 = .80, then multiply 84 by .20 (what's remaining) to get 16.8
Drug dosage instructions state that 7.5 mL of the drug should be mixed with 37.5 mL of saline solution and be administered intravenously over the course of 2 hours. How many tablespoons of saline solution are needed? [1 Tbsp = 15 mL] a. 3.0 Tbspb. 3.5 Tbspc. 2.5 Tbspd. 4.0 Tbsp
2.5 tbsp divide 37.5 mL by 15 mL 37.5/15= 2.5
Calculating percentages
observations/total observations TIMES 100 = percentage. Example: quiz grade is 24/27. 24 divided by 27 = .88888 times 100 = 88%. *Calculating percentages can allow you to estimate the impact of a decrease (or increase) in patient volume, which can tell you the number of personnel needed for a particular medical service.
simple fractions
simple fractions are those that are less a whole number (3/4, 6/7, 9/10)
converting percentages to fractions
*percent = per 100* 82% = 82/100 then simplified = 41/50. 9% = 9/100 120% = 120/100 (improper fraction) 1 20/100, then simplify to equal 1 1/5
converting decimals to fractions
*think what place does the decimal end?* 0.4 = 4/10, 0.04= 4/100, 0.603 = 603/1000, 1.88 = 1 88/100, 0.002 = 2/1000, 9.5 = 9 5/10
Improper or top heavy fractions
3/2 is the same as 1 1/2. (Just remember to divide the numerator by the denominator - top number divided into the smaller number 3 divided by 2 = 1.5
A bulk supply of gauze contains 84 rolls. In the past day, the emergency room department has consumed 21 rolls of gauze. What fraction of the gauze is remaining? Reduce this fraction to its most simple form. a. 1/4 b. 63/84 c. 21/84 d. 3/4
3/4 84 - 21 = 63. 63/84 = .75 which is 3/4
A specific type of drug should be stored at 10° C. What temperature should the refrigerator be set to in degree Fahrenheit? a. 50° F b. 58° F c. 46° F d. 54° F
50 degrees Fahrenheit To convert temperatures in degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 (or 9/5) and add 32. 10 * 1.8 = 18, then add 32 = 50
What are the decimal place values for each digit of the following number? .718239
7 is the tenths 1 is the hundredths 8 is the thousandths 2 is the ten thousandths 3 is the hundred thousandths 9 is the millionths
compound fractions (mixed number fractions)
Compound fractions are those that represent numbers greater than one (1 1/2, 3 3/4, 56 1/4)
calculating cumulative frequency
Remember to cumulatively add the amount of volumes to each one before to get to the cumulative frequency (that total is the one that will be used as the denominator when calculating relative frequency) Age: Volume: Cumulative Frequency: 0-20 84 84 21-40 137 137+84 = 221 41-60 155 155+137+84 = 376 61-80 194 194+155+137+84 = 570 81-100 212 212+155+137+84 = 588
Two people, Mark and Tim, are both coding medical records. Mark codes eight records every 35 minutes (8:35). Tim, on the other hand, codes 15 records an hour (15:60). Who is faster and by how much? a. Mark is faster by 1.468 minutes per record. b. Tim is faster by 3.543 minutes per record. c. Mark is faster by 5.291 minutes per record. d. Tim is faster by 0.375 minutes per record
Tim is faster by 0.375 minutes per record Mark codes 8 records every 35 mins (8:35) Tim codes 15 records every 60 mins (15:60) The question is asking who is FASTER and by HOW MUCH. The question is looking for TIME. Time must be listed first (as the numerator in the fraction, the amount of charts is the denominator.) Mark - 35/8, divide 35 by 8 to get 4.375 Tim - 60/15, divide 60 by 15 to get 4. <<< TIM IS FASTER!
converting percentages to decimals
To convert a decimal to a percent, divide by 100. 40% = 40/100 = .40 73% = 0.73 9.5% = 0.095 130% = 1.30
absolute frequency
the absolute frequency is the TOTAL number of values for the variable being measured. In a class of 23 students, the absolute frequency is 23.
relative frequency (calculated as a percentage)
the observed frequency of a value divided by the absolute frequency (the total) *answer is a percent* -in a class of 23, 6 are males and 17 are female. The observed frequency of males is 6, then divide that by the absolute frequency. 6/23 = 26%
frequency
the total number of occurrences of a value. -in a class of 23 students, 6 are male, 17 are female. The frequency of males would be 6.
calculating variance
variance is a measure of how different the values are from each other. -to calculate the variance, we need to first obtain the mean. Ex: 82+81+79+85+83=410, 410 divided by 5 = 82. Next determine what the difference is between each score and the mean for all scores. Then SQUARE each sum and add them together. The sum is 20, so then the last step is to divide the sum by 5 which equals 4. The variance is 4. *IF ALL THE SCORES ARE THE SAME, THE VARIANCE WOULD BE ZERO*
