The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: The story starts off with this guy named Ichabod coming from Connecticut to Sleepy Hollow, NY to teach. The only skill he has is teaching. He moves around from neighborhood to neighborhood tutoring kids and staying in people's houses. He keeps all of his belongings in a big handkerchief. Then he gets a student named Katrina Van Tassel. Her family is very rich. Ichabod wants to marry her so he can get to her family's money. He has one big problem, because she has a boyfriend (Brom Bones). Brom Bones knows Ichabod is hitting on his woman so he plays a lot of pranks on Ichabod. Then Ichabod is invited to a party at Katrina's house. He goes there to try and get Katrina. Ichabod gets to dance with her and Brom Bones gets really jealous. After the party, Ichabod finds out that the only reason she danced with him was to make Brom Bones jealous. Ichabod gets mad and rides away. When he is riding, the headless horseman rides up to him and throws his head at Ichabod. The next day the people find Ichabod's horse but can't find Ichabod. They spread rumors about him. Some say he is dead, some say he is afraid to come back to Sleepy Hollow. Whenever Brom Bones hear people talk about the headless horseman and Ichabod, he smiles.

The Pit and the Pendulum: A man is in a room without light. He attempts to figure out his rooms shape, and ends up almost falling down a pit. Later he is drugged by the food the captors give him. He ends up strapped to a table with a big pendulum holding a giant blade that slowly descends. In order to save himself, he takes the beef they allowed him to have as a last meal, and smothers his bindings in their juices, prompting the rats to eat at them. He is released just before the blade would have killed him, only to have the walls move towards the center pit. He would have fallen in if a man did not grab his arm. That man is an officer in charge of releasing all the prisoners at the end of the Inquisition.

The Raven: Edgar Allan Poe's narrative poem, "The Raven", is told by a man sitting alone in his room. Late one night, he hears a tapping sound at his door. At first he thinks it is merely someone coming to visit him. Instead of opening the door, he begins to reminisce on his lost love, Lenore, who has recently died. Finally, the man begins to fear what is on the other side of the door. When he works up the courage to open the door, all he sees is darkness. The narrator continues to hear the tapping, so he checks the window. In flies a raven who lands on a sculpture of Athena above his door. The narrator asks the raven what its name is. The raven answers, "Nevermore" (line 48). He then muses that "on the morrow he will leave" like everyone else in his life (line 59). Again, the raven answers with "Nevermore" (line 60). This is the only word the raven speaks to the narrator. Eventually, the narrator begins to ask the raven about Lenore. When he asks if Lenore is in Heaven, the raven repeats, "Nevermore" (line 90). This angers the narrator who then yells "Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!" (line 97). The raven does not move. The narrator realizes that the bird will never leave because it represents his memory of Lenore which will also never leave him.

Young Goodman Brown: The story begins at dusk in Salem, Massachusetts, as young Goodman Brown leaves Faith, his wife of three months, for an unknown errand in the forest. Faith pleads with her husband to stay with her, but he insists that the journey must be completed that night. In the forest he meets an older man, dressed in a similar manner and bearing a physical resemblance to himself. The man carries a black serpent-shaped staff. The two encounter Goody Cloyse in the woods, who complains about the need to walk and, evidently friendly with the stranger, accepts his snake staff and flies away to her destination. Other townspeople inhabit the woods that night, traveling in the same direction as Goodman Brown. When he hears his wife's voice in the trees, he calls out but is not answered. He then seems to fly through the forest, using a maple staff the stranger fashioned for him, arriving at a clearing at midnight to find all the townspeople assembled. At the ceremony (which may be a witches' sabbath) carried out at a flame-lit rocky altar, the newest converts are brought forth—Goodman Brown and Faith. They are the only two of the townspeople not yet initiated to the forest rite. Goodman Brown calls to heaven to resist and instantly the scene vanishes. Arriving back at his home in Salem the next morning, Goodman Brown is uncertain whether the previous night's events were real or a dream, but he is deeply shaken, and his belief he lives in a Christian community is distorted. He loses his faith in his wife, along with all of humanity. He lives his life an embittered and suspicious cynic, wary of everyone around him. The story concludes: "And when he had lived long, and was borne to his grave...they carved no hopeful verse upon his tombstone, for his dying hour was gloom."
