The Apgar scale assess the newborns physical condition quickly and is used by doctors and nurses to determine a course of action and determine the health of the baby. It specifically measures heart rate, respiratory effort, reflex irritability, muscle tone and color. It rates the child on a scale of 0, 1 or 2. It's used at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth.
