rash decision

A carless decision.

What is Mr. Peters first wish?

A wife as beautiful as the forest Symbolism The dried leaves reflect the character's (King of the Forest) mean attitude

Internal

Leita is a human, and her sister is a swan. Leita struggles to overcome the loneliness she feels because she is separated from her sister.

Internal

Leita is torn between her old life as a swan and her current life as a human being. Leita is torn between missing her sister and loving her husband. She struggles between her devotion to Mr. Peters and her desire to live as a swan with her sister. Or they may see the main conflict as internal for Mr. Peters, between his desire for Leita's companionship and his wish to see her happy.

What is the conflict?

Leta is crying and calling for her sister to wait for her. Infer that Rhea may be migrating for the winter.

External

Mr. Peters and Leita struggle to find happiness together. The main conflict is external, between Mr. Peters and Leita. They love each other but Leita is unhappy. Mr. Peters has to decide whether to turn her back into a swan or not. If not, she will remain unhappy as a human

Inference: Mr. Peters is found smiling happily, holding a withered leaf and a white feather. What does that description suggest?

Mr. Peters never uses the third wish and dies content. He proved the King of the Forest wrong. He died happy and the swans loved him.

Inference: Leita tells Mr. Peters not to use his second wish to turn her back into a swan:

She is in love with Mr. Peters.

Inference: "Poor Mr. Peters . . . did his best to make her life happier, . . . even suggesting a trip round the world. But she said no to that; she would prefer to stay in their own house near the river.

She want stay near her sister.

When the King of the Forest first appears, how do you know that he and Mr. Peters are experiencing an external conflict

The King has fierce eyes, is unfriendly, and speaks threateningly to Mr. Peters. The King of the Forest has a distrustful, scornful, rude attitude. He assumes that Mr. Peters is trying to get something from him like everyone else. He doesn't understand Mr. Peters is only being kind.

Internal or external conflict? When Mr. Peters comes to bed one night and finds Leita calling out for her sister ,Rhea, to wait for her in her sleep, how is her ______conflict revealed

The conflict is internal because Leta is having problems with herself not with others..

Inference: "Next day he saw two swans swimming at the bottom of the garden, and one of them wore the gold chain he had given Leita after their marriage; she came up and rubbed her head against his hand

The swans are Leita and her sister; Leit still loves him.

When Mr. Peters shows Leita all of his treasures, why does the river please her the most?

This is where her sister lives

Why does Mr. Peters changes Leita back into a swan?

because the situation was hopeless and Leita would never be happy as a human.

malicious

evil; wicked

Why doesn't Mr. Peters use all three of his wishes at once because

he could only think of one wish. He puts the other 2 in a suitcase and pricked his tongue with a thorn, so wouldn't make rash wishes. He has an internal conflict because he remembered what another man had done by speaking rash words in anger (to his wife) and the sausage that was his first wish ended up on her nose. Mr. Peters pricked his tongue with a thorn to remind him not to make any rash wishes. He also put the other 2 wishes away in his case.

At the start of "The Third Wish," the only thing bothering Mr. Peters ( he is content and has almost everything he needs)

his is a little lonely and would like a companion.

Inference: "I have yet to hear of the human being who made any good use of his three wishes— they mostly end up worse off than they started." (old King)

old King is assuming that Mr. Peters will waste the three wishes.

Leita leaves a lot to go to the lake because?

she misses being a swan
