You have definitely learned by now that driving is a risky proposition. It is the one thing we do every day where we can be injured or even die. Thousands of people are hurt every year as a result of car wrecks and sometimes their living or dying depends on receiving an organ donation or other anatomical gift. Here are some facts you should know about organ and tissue donation: An anatomical gift is the act of donating one's tissues or organs which can then be transplanted to another person. Surveys show that most people support tissue and organ donation; yet those surveyed report that they would not consent to donation by a family member if they had not previously discussed organ donation. The key to solving our national organ and tissue shortage is to encourage family discussion regarding donation. The Donate Life Texas Anatomical Gift Educational Program (AGEP) is a statewide program with the goal of educating Texas residents about anatomical gifts. It provides information about the benefits of organ, tissue, and eye donation; the procedures for becoming an organ, tissue, or eye donor; and the laws governing organ, tissue, and eye donation. www.donatelifetexas.org More than 110,000 people need life-saving organ transplants in the United States. [Solid organs: Hearts, kidneys, pancreases, lungs, livers and intestines.] In one year there were just 8,021 deceased organ donors in the United States. A total of 21,855 organs were transplanted because these donors gave the gift of life. Each day, on average, 18 people die in the United States because of the shortage of organ donors. Every 11 minutes, a new name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. Each year, more than one million people need lifesaving and life-improving tissues, and corneas. [Tissues: Heart valves, cardiovascular tissue, bone and soft musculoskeletal tissue, and skin.] Both organs (heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, small bowel) and tissues (skin, bone, ligaments, tendons, heart valves, saphenous veins and corneas) can be donated.
If you decide that you are interested in making an anatomical gift here is what you need to know about becoming an organ donor: Anyone can indicate his or her intent to become an organ donor. Minors under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian consent. After serious consideration and discussion with your family and loved ones, you can indicate your intention on your driver license and by carrying an organ donor card. Even if you sign a Uniform Donor Card (requiring two family members as witnesses) and indicate your intention on your driver license, it is essential that your family knows and abides by your wishes. In the event of your death, health care professionals will ask your family members for their consent to donate your organs and tissues. They will be more likely to follow your wishes if you have discussed it with them.
