The Golden Country symbolizes Winston's ideal of how the world should look. It is his dream like fantasy world. Here he would like to stand among nature's beauty and appreciate the naked dark haired girl's gestures as she flings her clothes away. The dark haired girl is Julia. Later, Winston and Julia are seeking refugee and Winston hints that the vast open spaces of the outdoors are almost relatable to the Golden Country. It mainly represents freedom from the party.

The meaning of "the proles have stayed human" to Winston means that the proles were able to experience emotion without thinking too deeply. The party members are guarded and watched while the proles are able to roam the streets, but at the same time the proles were controlled. The proles get to keep feelings and relationships in a way that Winston is not allowed to. The proles get to be left alone and have private lives and families. People like Winston are not allowed to do that so he thinks they are less human because of that.

The paperweight symbolizes the past in which Winston seeks without any regard to the consequences in the world. It also symbolizes the beauty of the love Julia and Winston have found even though it is forbidden in Oceania. Just like the glass surrounding the paperweight Julia and Winston are vulnerable. When the thought police come to take them due to how obvious they made their love, they throw the paperweight and it shatters across the room. This foreshadows what will become of Julia and Winston's relationship.
