When are you most susceptible to the common cold?

People are most susceptible to the common cold during the rainy and cold seasons, because during the autumn/winter people tend to group together indoors, causing the virus to spread. Besides the cold season, toddlers and infants are extremely prone to contracting the illness, because their immune systems have not been built up to battle the family of viruses that cause the common cold. Of course if someone has a weakened immune system, they are overall more likely to suffer from the common cold.

What causes the common cold?

The common cold can be caused by many different viruses. There are more than 200 viruses that cause the common cold. Although the different viruses that cause the common cold are very similar, they are different enough that a person's immune system has to create new antibodies for each of the 200 strains and can't just use the ones stored in their memory cells from the last cold they had. Because of this, each person can get the common cold 200 times. The most commonly seen viruses are rhinoviruses and coronaviruses.

What impact does the common cold have on our society?

The common cold impacts society greatly because it is contracted by so many people. It is the leading reason that people stay home from school and it costs the U.S. economy approximately forty billion dollars each year in treatments and lost work days. This leads to a significant amount of lost productivity. On top of that, the common cold usually chain reacts with other people, and then all of those people get sick. You could see why it costs the U.S. economy over 40 billion dollars.

What are the most frequent symptoms for the common cold and what is at least one way you can treat these symptoms?

The most prevalent symptoms that occur during the common cold are coughing, having a sore throat, experiencing nasal congestion/having a runny nose, and sneezing. Vicks Dayquil/Nyquil brand or other effective cold remedies is a good way of relieving yourself of common cold symptoms until your body fights off the virus. Also, drinking warm liquids and even chicken soup can help thin the mucus because of their heat and other properties.

What are the ways in which the common cold is transmitted?

When someone near you coughs, sneezes, or blows their nose, the cold virus spreads through small air droplets that released from the above effects. For example. when a friend coughs near you he is transmitting the virus through coughing up small air droplets containing the virus. If these air droplets come in contact with places like your mouth or nose it possibly leads you to catch the cold youself. To sum this up, if you get the common cold you most likely got it from someone else.
