Art: Chapter 6
Name the three components of color
1. hue 2. intensity 3. value
Name the seven different kinds of color schemes.
1. monochromatic 2. analogous 3. complementary 4. triad 5. split complementary 6. warm 7. cool
Paints are made up of what three basic ingredients?
1. pigment 2. binder 3. solvent
Color wheel
1st triangle is: red, yellow, blue 2nd triangle is: orange, green, purple In between colors: Red- orange, orange- yellow, yellow- green, blue- green, blue- purple, purple- red
monochromatic
A color scheme that uses only one hue and the tints and shades of that hue.
binder
A material that holds together the grains of pigment.
Describe the difference between tint & shade
A tint is a light value and a shade is a dark value.
Define color wheel. What does it show?
Color wheel: the spectrum bent into a circle. It shows the three primary, three secondary, and six intermediate hues.
What happens when you mix a hue with its complement?
It dulls the hue or lowers it's intensity.
Intensity
The brightness or dullness of a hue.
tint
a light value of a hue.
color
an element of art that is derived from reflected light.
analogous colors
colors that are next to each other on the color wheel and have a common hue.
What are complementary colors?
complementary colors: the strongest contrast of a hue.
shade
dark value of a hue.
How do eyes see color?
eyes see color by light waves reflecting from objects to your eyes.
pigments
finely ground colored powders that form paint when mixed with a binder.
What types of colors, placed side by side, seem to vibrate?
high-intensity complements.
What is an afterimage?
it's the opposite of a color.
what is the difference between optical & arbitrary color?
optical color is the color that actually appeared and not the color changed by shadows and lights. Arbitrary color is a personal preference they, the artists picks.
dyes
pigments that dissolve in liquid.
List an example of a color triad
primary triad: red, yellow, blue
List an example of a split complementary color scheme
red-orange, blue, green
complementary color
the colors opposite each other on the color wheel.
What is color value?
the darkness or lightness of a color.
solvent
the liquid that controls the thickness or thinnest of the paint.
hue
the name of a color in the color spectrum, such as red, blue, or yellow.
List an example of a monochromatic color scheme
violet, red-violet, red, red-orange, orange.
How do complementary colors affect each other?
when a pair of high intensity complements are placed by each other they seem to vibrate.
color spectrum
when light passes through a wedge shaped glass, called a prism, the beam of white light is bent and separated into hands of color.
