Ch1: Natural Resources: Types and Development
Differentiate between Natural Resources and Man-Made Resources
*Natural Resources* 1. Natural Resources occur naturally from the earth's core. 2. Natural resources are obtained in a raw form. *Man-Made Resources* 1. Man-made resources are made by man. 2. Man-made resources are made by converting raw resources into finished or proper resources.
Differentiate between Non-Recyclable Resources and Recyclable Resources.
*Non-Recyclable Resources* 1. Resources which can't be recycled. 2. Mostly, resources which are composted. *Recyclable Resources* 1. Resources which can be recycled. 2. Mostly resources which can be composted.
Differentiate between Potential Resources and Actual Resources
*Potential Resources* 1. Resources which exist in nature but have not been put to proper use. 2. Quality and quantity is not defined. *Actual Resources* 1. Resources which have been surveyed and assessed for actual use. 2. The quantity and quality is confirmed on actual viability.
What is the development and utilisation of resources depended upon?
1. The level of technological knowledge of the people of that region. 2. The economic development of that region 3. the cost involved in exploiting and developing these resources 4. the availability of a good transport network 5. Social and political support in developing the resources. Several potential resources fail to be developed due to resistance by environmental activists and non-cooperation by the local people.
Why is conservation of resources an important need?
1. We need resources in order to meet our daily needs. 2. Resources help us to survive. 3. Many generations will come after us and in order to survive, they require resources to meet their daily needs. 4. Resources are deleting day by day and to satisfy our needs without compromising the future generations' resources, it is important to conserve resources.
Define resource. Mention any two characteristics of resource.
Anything on earth that is necessary for human survival and satisfies human needs is called a resource. Resources are essential for all living beings including humans to survive. The characteristics of resources are: 1. Natural resources are not very useful in raw form. 2. They acquire value when they are processed to meet the daily needs of humans.
ubiquitous
Resources that are found everywhere like land and air.
inexhaustible or renewable
Resources that can be reproduced, regenerated or renewed within a period of time by physical, mechanical or chemical processes, are renewable resources. Solar energy, soil, water, wind, plants, wildlife and humans fall in this category. They are continuous and always available.
localized
Resources which are found only in certain places e.g. coal and copper are formed in specific locations only.
How does a resource become a reserve?
When the part of an actual resource can be developed profitably in the future it is called a reserve.
"All resources whether natural or human, resources are not evenly distributed on the earth." Do you agree? Give resources in support of your answer.
Yes, I agree with the above statement that whether natural or human, resources are not event distributed on the Earth. The following are the reasons to support my answer: 1. The distribution of resources depends on a number of physical factors like the topography, climate, and the altitude of that region. 2. In some places, the resources are not used properly which results in the depletion of resources in that place. 3. Also, in some places the exact quality and quantity of resources is unknown which results in the non-utilisation of those resources.
extinction
ceasing of existence of a species from the surface of the Earth
sustainable development
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
green revolution
rapid increase in food production in the 1960s due to the use of high yielding variety seeds, chemical fertilisers, insecticides and pesticides
Why is it better to use paper bags and not plastic bags?
It is better to use paper bags and not the plastic bags because paper bags can be easily composed or disposed off but plastic bags can't easily be composed or disposed off. Plastics act as a chocking hazard and also are not eco-friendly whereas paper bags can be recycled, they are mostly made from recycled paper and they are also eco-friendly.
Explain sustainable development of resources.
Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. 1. In the interest of sustainable development is important that we take steps for using resources properly. 2. It involves preventing wastage of resources, checking pollution and making deliberate efforts to develop without damaging the environment.
Conservation of resources
The wise use of resources by avoiding misuse.
abiotic resources
These are derived from the non-living world, e.g.- land, water and air, mineral and power resources are examples of abiotic resources.
biotic resources
These are derived from the plants and animals. They include forest resources, wild and domestic animals, fish and birds.
exhaustible or non-renewable
These are resources like minerals and fossil fuels that get exhausted with continuous use and are not easy to replenish. Judicious use of these resources would help make them last longer.
